Wireless LAN is very much Line Of Sight LOS and without that there is
little chance of a signal, although grazing paths may and do work.

You are on the right track. Best thing to do is to ask around for like
minded individuals within reasonable LOS distance, 1 to 5 Km for starters
then move out as your lan size increases.

Not that easy, you may have that high gain dish and that low loss coax
but if you are not pointing in the right direction at exactly the right
time you will never know if someone else is near by!!
Best to do what I suggested above.

Just another method of connecting computers.
Might I suggest that to assist you in understanding Wireless Lanning that
you actually invest in a system at you home, ie, 2 computers and 2
wireless cards/Access points and play around with linking and file sharing
and internet sharing and whatever takes your networking fancy and that way
you will gain a better understanding close by where problems can be fixed
without having to travel miles to fix or get fixed, THEN, venture up a
mast to a dish to that friend miles away.
One thing I can not stress more.....2.4 GHz and mW's of power, everything
you do to minimise loss will return to you 10 fold in link quality. I
have my access point mounted at the back of the dish with just 2 ft of
coax, losses will be maybe 1 or 2 db if that and I am only pumping 60mW
into 25db gain of dish and my link partner and I can really only
guarrantee each other a 2 Mbit/s link, 5.5 and 11 Mbit/s are possible but
the errors go up expotentially. Trees.....ahhh for a chain saw and the
neighbours to go away for the weekend....near trees can have a VERY bad
affect on signal so best to place the dish orientation as clear as
possible from them.....
Ok, Hope that wets your appetite a little more.
Best of luck.
Regards
Mark
