And therein lies the problem - it isn't just about band conditions.

Time was that when there was an opening, the world and his uncle would be
on the bands, but those days seem to be long gone. I've often heard
beacons on 28Mhs over the years but heard no activity, called CQ and got
no reply.

What's you best DX with this opening Bob? Any takers?

The Worldwide Six Metre Club website looks interesting, at:

http://www.dxzone.com/cgi-bin/dir/jump2.cgi?ID=6060

Consider the low level of activity against the number of licence holders:

Country Number of amateurs Year of Report
Japan 1,296,059 1999
USA 679,864 2000
Thailand 141,241 1999
South Korea 141,000 2000
Germany 79,666 2000
Taiwan 68,692 1999
Spain 58,700 1999
United Kingdom 58,426 2000
Canada 44,024 2000
Russia 38,000 1993
Brazil 32,053 1997
Italy 30,000 1993
Indonesia 27,815 1997
France 18,500 1997
Ukraine 17,265 2000
Argentina 16,889 1999
India 10,679 2000
South Africa 6,000 1994
Norway 5,302 2000
Malaysia 2,730 2006
China 800 2000

I'm sure some of these figures are well out of date. I believe that the
number of amateurs in Japan has all but collapsed. I was surprised to see
France is so low compared to the UK, with a similar population.

As I said, having a licence, and feeling disposed to go on the air are two
quite separate things. If 10 Metres was wide open right now I couldn't be
bothered to walk up a flight of stairs to my shack. Just not interested.
I'm really pleased for those who do get pleasure from it, as I did for a
brief time 30 years ago.
