Hi Dick, Trekkies and sci-fi buffs,
Yes Asimov among other writers was a physicist and it shows plainly, most
of his short stories are quite plausable. As for the "who dunnit" aspect,
he was famous for his scientific investigations of the famous murder
mystery premise. You can call him a sci-fi forensic investigator, even
his Foundation Series starts with a murder investigation.
Carl Sagan, an astronomer, was also a passable writer although outside of
Hollywood his works are not so well known. The whole trouble with books
vs. movies is the bery best writers don't translate well to the silver
screen. I have seen some rather good (although obscure cult classics)
works but on the other hand there were some real awful ones, one can say
they stink on ice.
On the subject of Trek, Gene Rodenberry was a good writer although very
little is known besides his Star Trek creation which BTW was fueled by
unknown writers. Now if you want some good reading, the novels are
excellent, some written by fans. The TV series Enterprise somehow got the
whole timeline bent out of shaped, warped if you will (;->), since the
NCC-1700 Galaxy Class prototype was taken out on an unsuccessful
shakedown byt Kirk's father. I have no idea how Captain Archer fits in,
must have landed on fertile ground on one of those unexpected time slides
in a previous TV show. (;->) BTW, what the heck is ablative hull plating
anyway? Someone must have overlooked his dictionary when he came up with
that one!
