The nuts on mine have a conical fixed heavy 'washer' to locate on the alloys.
I think this is normal on alloys to prevent the nut digging into the soft
alloy.

I never ever let them tighten the wheel nuts on my vehicles with an air gun. I
once had a wheel coming off 100yds down the road, because they had used an
airline where the compressor had turned off and the pressure was low. There is
also the point that they overtighten if not set up correctly - so I just ask
them to get them tight enough to allow the wheels to take the weight, then
torque them up myself.

Better than a wheel nut spider is a wheel nut spanner with a telescopic
extension on the arm. I paid about œ5 or œ6 for one from Lidl/Aldi. It has a
reversable socket on the end, so it fits two nut sizes and gives much more
leverage than a spider and there is less chance of back injury. I don't know
if you mentioned it, but it is always easier to free the nuts first before you
try jacking the car up. I fit the spanner so its end is slightly above
horizontal and stand on the end. You cannot do this with a spider.

Better than plain grease on the threads, is Copper Slip anti-seize compound.

You also didn't mention locking wheel nuts. Always make sure you have the
adaptor for this in the car at all times and that it actually fits all of the
wheels. If your car is second hand and this adaptor is missing get it sorted
out quickly. Most tyre fitters will have a device handy which can remove these
- take along either some replacement locking nuts or some normal nuts/studs to
replace them.

I have got them of in the past by simply finding an old socket which is a
tight fit and hammering it on to the locking nut. Another way is to do what I
did last week on my grandsons car's rounded off sump plug - I found a nut with
a thread which was almost big enough to slide over the head of the sump plug,
gave it a thump with a hammer to jam it in place, then welded the around
inside the thread of the new nut onto the sump plug.

If you attempt this with a wheel nut, don't put the earth clamp on the cars
body - put it on one of the other wheel nuts or the wheel. If you put it on
the body the welding current will passes through the wheel bearings, doing
them no good at all.
