Oh yes the computer systems for running the plant are complex! But I am
only talking about the safety control system, which is a seperate system
from the automation programs. All the safety system has to do is shut
the thing off when certain sensors are tripped. It has no interaction
with the automation system.
So you see Nuke is quite safe, I read in a book just recently written by
a scientist at the National Radiation Lab here in NZ. It says that Nuke
has been made up to be alot more dangerous than it actually is. Even the
Chernobyl accident was blown way out of proportion by the media. In
fact, only 30 people died as a direct result, and several hundred more
because of the cancers attributed to radiation. Not a big disaster, only
a small disaster. Nuke is indeed one of the safest power means in the
long-term.
As far as waste is concerned, that is also made to sound a lot worse
than it actually is. Compared to a coal fired power station which
generates about 300,000 tonnes of ash per year, an equivalent Nuke
station only generates 300 cubic metres of low level waste, and 30
tonnes of high level waste. And there are many possiblities for storge
of this waste. At the moment it is being stored in drums, just waiting
for an appropriate dumping site. There has been investigation into
dumping it deep under a mountain, and the US has decided to start
dumping it but there is still some legal stuff to get through which
could take years. If it is stored in a mountain, the leakage is
approximatly 1/3 of normal background radiation. No danger whatsoever.
Seventy-Three.
