No Patrick, you have to redefine your ideas of what constitutes desert. Of
the huge area of so called desert in Australia most of it has vegetation
and animal life of many sorts; there is not so much pure sandy desert like
the Sahara.We have the most diverse systems of  plants and animal life you
will find anywhere even in the dry centre. Much of this area is lacking
surface water but has stations - cattle or sheep. A long way below the
surface are some large artesian basins tapped in some places for artesian
water for the stations.That is not say there could be some areas which
would be suitable for storing nuclear waste but I think you had better
look elsewhere for your nuclear dump!
