I can only go on what is being reported in this country, and the use of
ethanol in fuel has been debated for some time. It is banned in my state.
As for the use of unleaded petrol in the earlier car engines not designed
for it, I believe you are not correct there, Patrick. When unleaded petrol
came into use here there were plenty of vehicles in real trouble needing
valve jobs  through the lack of the lubricating action of the lead in the
fuel. Valves and their seats had to be modified to take the new fuel and
additives were produced to assist with the unmodified engines. The same
problem arose with the use of LPG in the earlier models; an additive was
produced to lubricate the valves.
