Hi Jerry and readers,

YUP, you're 100% right, the headlamp inrush (surge) current killed the Ix
of the alternator. Without the battery reference voltage the
alternator/regulator will not work properly. The thing everyone
overlooked all along (Jeff's experiment or no) is every voltage regulator
is a DC amplifier and as a regulator needs a reference voltage source, in
automotive work the battery is it. Without it if you kill the exitation
the loss is irrecoverable. BTW, while that bit focused on voltage,
excitation is always current, (Ix) remember voltage is potential, but you
knew that. (;->)

Congratulations! (For using your noodle.) I explained the function of the
battery to Jeff privately so you worked it out entirely on your own.
