Maybe I'm missing something here or else my knowledge of car electrics has
not been kept up to date.
The only time I disconnected my battery and ran the engine without it I
blew my headlight globes since the voltage rose above 12 volts. Is the
output of the alternator regulated at 12 volts or a little more in a
modern car.
Patrick's 2000 rpm would have my car travelling at more than 70 mph. Not
recommended in this country!

the alternators output is not enough to power all the electrical consumers
in a car, i.e, with headlights on (which is THE main consumer of current)
the battery is supplying most of the current
