Hi , I will muddy the waters a bit more .A long time ago I had a car with a
generator and one evening I noticed the lights dimming when I slowed .On
checking I found the earth strap had broken , so the battery was
effectively disconnected. Several years ago with a car with alternato with
internal regulator I suspected the alternator was not putting out as much
current as it should and took it to an auto electrician . He put an
ammeter on the charge lead and only got 35 amps ,when it was put on the
alternator it went to 60 amps.He told me that he had done some tests with
the car manufacturer on a different model and many of that model had
enough resistance between the alternator and battery to adversely affect
the charge rate. I asked him whether a direct lead would help and he
installed one (with a fusible link ) and that fixed the problem , I
replaced the last battery after 6 years and flattening it a couple of times
by leaving the lights on ,it had lost quite a lot of capacity by that time
but so far as I know is still good enough to run my emergency light for a
couple of hours, I give it a couple of hours charge every few months and
test the light.

Take care, kindest regards. DE
