Hi all,

I'm finding that this is quite an interesting thread.

I wonder if the advice to disconnect the battery from the car before applying
the charger might be in case the battery terminal clamps are not making a 100%
connection to the battery itself? This could be due to corrosion or looseness
in some way. The result could be rather unusual voltages from the charger
appearing on the car's "nominally 12v" electrical system, with the battery
having little stabilising effect.

Checking that the clamps are indeed in perfect contact with the battery posts
might be a good idea.

Hmmmmm ... mention of loose connections reminds me of when my son's girlfriend
had problems starting her car when visiting here recently. The battery
terminals were very badly corroded and tinfoil had been wrapped around them to
build up the diameter so that the terminals would be able to fit (yuk!)

Some grease had been added to (I assume) stop any further corrosion.

When she attempted to start the car with the bonnet up so that we could watch
what happened, we were stunned by the sight of the grease on one of the
battery terminals suddenly melting AND THEN FLAMES LICKING UP FROM IT!

It took a while for our pulses to return to normal ...

73 David.
