Hello

Especially Terry , VK 5 ATN

Well, you do talk now about welding on the vehicle...
B4 the go was just on a tiny weenie battery charger , which
might deliver only a couple of amps.
Welding, the electrical kind - you might use around 60 to 70
volts ac with a current behind it of - say 80 amps.
This can , and will induce quite some voltages in loops ,
which by incident some of the cars wiring might provide.

Also boost starting. The external battery will provide a
couple of hundred amps short current. ( If handled that
boosting the wrong way)
Assuming both negative grounded cars , the right sequence
is to connect negative both cars first , have the delivering
car on increased idle and then carefully connect the
positives.

Still, there could be a bad , corroded connection somewhere
which might allow overvoltage in the wrong places , and
sparking. Sparks, as we know will not just be an nostalgic
form of Ham-Radio. But here , with iductivities somewhere
and high currents around it can kill sensitive electronic
equipment.

Years ago it was said - NOT to disconnect the battery on a
running car. At these times the alternator voltage control
was taken from the battery bus lead. Nowadays alternator
output voltage is regulated and it should be safe to
disconnect the battery. But DO NOT bet on it.

Also , a healthy well connected battery acts as a big
capacitor , absorbing a lot of surges.

No matter of any safe procedure I think it is still possible
to kill any electronic gear which is itself not properly
safeguarded. ( and even then)

But most damages will be done by fumblemechanics or gorillas
which you nowdays see in so many garages doung
car-maintenance. More electronics , the more is there to
blow ...its that simple.

Here is more food for thought : Years ago we had to install
a car radio in a Mercedes-Benz -Diesel. IT blew the fuse of
the radio. The radio was checked-found to be ok, and the
fuse replaced. It blew the radio fuse again...Guess what?
the battery in the car was reverse polarity installed. Never
mind the car was running fine , everything else worked fine.
I think that would give alot of problems elsewhere...

A rally good solution , for cars , green power and else
would be the invention of an AC battery....any takers?
