An interesting subject , I always used to leave the battery connected
with my old cars but since taking my present one in with gearbox troubles
and having the garage charge the battery because they thought it needed it
when they gave it a final check the alternator didnt work -a shot diode.
After having that fixed the positive lead broke off a couple of months
later and that took out the internal regulator, so since then I have been
very wary, but no problem with jump starts as it doesnt have a computer.
I have been told that one should connect the positives together first ,
then the negative to the flat battery and finally the negative jumper lead
to a good earth on the donor carwhich is distant from the battery- this
is a precaution against sparking near the battery. When the car has been
started the leads are taken off in the reverse order.
When disconnecting a battery always take off the earthed lead first, this
stops sparks when the spanner slips and earths the live terminal.
the above sequence assumes both vehicles are negative earth.
Take care, kindest regards. DE
