Yeah I remember clearly. Those days, in PA3-land, almost everyone was
still working with Commodore-64's and those happy few with a PC were
running NET. It was stable but missed a lot of the nice features of the
later NOS versions. I got my HAM license somewhere in '86, and my first
real email message came around then. It was something about the old
tomcat.gsfc.nasa.gov server, forwarded by a friend that had a real
internet connection. Of course we used BM, Bdale's Mailer, and people
like Phil, Bdale and others were considered gods... Packet network
topology was ad-hoc and on 2 meters only. Netrom was coming up! People
used to oppose TCP/IP because it caused garbage on their C-64 screen,
and we favoured it --maybe also a little bit because of the same reason.

Oh I'd surely do so. These developments have had a major impact on my
life. I was in high-school in those days, and my interest for packet
radio, the seemingly endless possibilities of TCP/IP and the respect for
the community that created this all, has had major influence on my
career: I'll receive an MSEE in DSP and telecom, and that is mainly the
fault (;-) of people like you....
I'm glad to see that this list still exists, and I think it should never
cease to exist even if it were for nostalgic reasons. Luckily there's
more in Cyberspace than the Rutgers U. Linux mailing lists...
Take care, and can I say anything more than --Thanks-- ?

Right now I am doing what I wanted to do 25 years ago (computer
administration,
although back then computers took up rooms), but crew-dogging in the
USAF
got in the way :-) (much more fun, but much less pay).
Excellent point though, I've been known to spout the following
around the office:
"You can learn a lot about a protocol when it's only going 30 baud"

Wow, people coming out of the woodwork...!
I'm actually still running what started out to be 890421.1
and was ported to Unix by Bob Hoffman and later modified
by me so that I could run a PBBS, using "net" as the TNC
support and IP router. Still works just fine! It's running
now under FreeBSD, but has been run under SYS V and Ultrix.
Now, what happened to W9NK?
