You can try the free program "GPS TrackMaker" (www.gpstm.com) and read the
track from the GPS using the Garmin protocol. This will give the route on
screen. When you point with the mouse to a line-segment it will give you
the speed, date and time for that line segment, originating from the GPS's
active tracklog.

Of course your GPS is a non calibrated device and there is a positioning
error in every measurement, so the calculated speed (which is just derrived
from two positions measurements and the time between the measurements) has
an error too. In practice the error is small since it is likely that both
measure positions have the same deviations, but it can be a lot bigger in
theory, making the measurement unusable as evidence.

You can list the speeds of several tracks before the crash, if the speed is
consitent over a number of measurements your chances increase.

By the way, GPSTM is a nice program for other purposes too, I like it a lot.

Good luck. Kind regards,

Henk.

The CW suggestion was in response to the reliability question. Which
is more reliable in a storm situation, an RF path or an internet
conection.

I don't think this has anything to do with UI-View but will post to the
UI-View group as well.

When using the filtered IS feeds I occasionally see stations (usually the
same ones) outside the filtered area.

Currently I see two station stations in North America.

HR2KOS-1
N0XBN-5

I see these two stations most of the time and then sometimes a station near
or on Lake Erie (sailboat icon)
(I haven't zoomed in to see that station when it shows up)

filter used:
filter r/34/-105/500 r/30/-98/500

I am curious why the filter is not catching those stations or what the
station is sending to have it be ignored.
When I look at the data it is coming in from the internet, NOT from RF.

There is a new Tier 2 Server operating to serve the needs of the APRS
community. Check http://newengland.aprs2.net:14501 for a complete list of
ports that this server offers beyond the common 10152 and 14580 ports. If
you have any other questions or inquiries about the Tier 2 network, check
http://www.aprs2.net Enjoy!

If those stations are messaging with stations seen within your range
settings, then you will see those messages and associated posits. This
is by design.

In all likelihood, if this is not caused by messaging, this would be a
javAPRSFilter problem, not a UI-View problem. Roger Bille monitors this
SIG and can take a look at it. Thank you for showing your filter
settings to make it easier to reproduce. Could you also indicate which
server and port you are connected to?

aprseast is what my server is currently connected to.

I looked and I find no messages to or from either in my logs. I do see
messages on FINDU, but not from today or within my expire time.
N0XBN-5 or HR2KOS-1

Another oddity,
HR2KOS-1 when viewed from FindU shows 0.000 for lat and lon.
From UIView here is the frame:
HR2KOS-1>APZ17,qAS,HR2KOS:!1530.67NU08806.83W
NOTE: The packet on FindU is 2 hours more recent....So maybe not a valid
comparison.

N0XBN-5 (same packet)
 From findu
Raw packet:
N0XBN-5>APU25E,N0XBN,N0ZQR*,WIDE,qAR,WB0WNX:=I97U65pB$&
BPHG22302/n0xbn@arrl.net {UIV32N}
 From UIView:
N0XBN-5>APU25E,N0XBN,N0ZQR*,WIDE,qAR,WB0WNX:=I97U65pB$&
BPHG22302/n0xbn@arrl.net {UIV32N}

Still working on it!

Mark,

I am also looking into this. The HR2KOS-1 packet is missing the Symbol code
at the end (after W). I am checking to see if javAPRSFilter is passing this
packet due to this. Maybe findu is also is failing and show 0.000 as
lat/long due to the Symbol code is missing.

N0XBN-5 is using a compressed position which is not so common, I'm checking
to see if I have made any error in the parsing.

David,

I have found a bug in my parsing of compressed packets, I am not yet sure
if that is related. I'm still investigating. I think your packet is fine.

Thanks

I don't recall ever having any messages from you.

I do admit I am pretty ignorant of all the "rules" of APRS, but I will not
patronize the arrogance you and your APRS friend KF4OTN spread over APRS
messaging or in this news group. As the saying goes; if you want to catch
flies, use honey not vinegar.

I welcome any suggestions from this group to better optimize the APRS
system. I will do my best to implement them as soon as possible and help
Randy K4OBX and Mike KB4TOH make the updates on the TNCs.

As for the reply "just because," that was the day I was doing my best to be
a gentleman to Eric's latest demands.
