I spoke with two people in the Kenwood booth and heard much of the same as
has been reported, including releasing the D7A(g) in a new case with a new
TNC in two years. I was told the new radio will have a polycarbonate casing
like the G71A and a better keypad that the printing did not wear off of.
They also said there might be a replacement to the D700 with a new TNC chip
to allow for more APRS functionality. When I asked if the existing D700
would be upgradable I was told probably not.
The reason given to me for the renewed interest in the D7A(g) is the
renewed interest in SkyCommand with the expected FCC change in rules.

I have had to REformat my HD several times and lost all my
state/county/street ZIP file maps (the ones with STREETS on 'em. (FL's is
17MB alone) They do not appear to be on TAPRs site any more, and Rutgers
seems to NOT have them labeled to easily find them. Can anybody tell me
where to find 'em?

Have you priced those D-Star line radios. Not for this lower middle
income fella anytime soon...<grin>

The aprs.rutgers.edu site has moved to www.winaprs.org, if you directly to
aprs.rutgers.edu it tells you that.
Tell me exactly what files you are looking for and I will make sure they
are up there. Are you looking for TIGER data or for one of the other types.

New case for the D7? Gee, maybe they'll find a way to stop putting the belt
clip on the battery so the stinkin thing doesn't take a dive when the cheap
little battery clips give way.

Hi all,
My experience has been the DigiTraveler, although it needs to re-acquire,
is considerably faster than the TripMate...
For your information, seems the TripMate draws enough current to run a less
than new battery down pretty fast. In my case, I went from maybe a 2 day
period with an old battery, couple years old, to 3-4 days sitting, with a
new battery.. Enough heat from the TripMate to melt snow on my windshield
with the unit on the dash of course!! <G>

I think that is a mis-placed request in that people will always snap belt
clips off and it is a far sight cheaper to replace a $35.00 battery , than
it is to re-case the whole or even the rear half of the radio...

Something I asked kenwood for last year at the DCC was when the D700 was in
APRS mode, to have it send a copy of each packet received to the serial
port. It does this when in TNC PACKET mode, but then the APRS features of
the radio are disabled. I felt that a PIC processor could sit and monitor
the serial port for certain packets which the kenwood might not know how to
handle such as QSY and heck, open trac. The PIC could then talk on serial
to the kenwood and work it's magic.
What I'd really like to see is an ethernet port on the radio... full rig
control over a telnet type connection (of course that would be concealed by
a glitzy windows app user interface).

Regarding pricing of ICOM D-STAR:
Yes, the 128 kb/s full blown 1.2 GHz D-STAR radio is pricey. In my post, I
was referring to ICOM's new line of AMBE+ radios coming out in 2M and 440
MHz. These are supposed to be priced in the normal el cheapo analog FM
range, with a nominal charge for the AMBE+ uplift. That way, you would be
digital (simultaneous digital AMBE+ voice with 4.8 kb/s simultaneous data)
and the price is supposed to be cheap. If Kenwood thinks they can stand
still for 2 years with stuff like this coming out, they are going to get
nailed in the marketplace. Also, these AMBE+ radios have a GPS interface
for APRS use. KEWL! Kenwodd may want to re-think a simple refresh to the
D7A and D700. Oh, yes, that reminds me: ICOM is also supposedly coming out
with a series of HHs with AMBE+ and simultaneous 4.8 kb/s data, plus a GPS
interface for APRS. Just my 2 Cents, and all this is just vaporware, until
and if, we ever see it as a reality in the marketplace. Nevertheless, I
sure like what ICOM is saying, as opposed to what Kenwood is saying!
