Yes, I know, I fully deserve to get a response like "RTFM".

Can anyone spell out for me exactly how to get a WinAPRS Igate to gate
"ZL" prefix traffic from the internet to RF?

Many thanks for your patience!

David ZL3AI.

I think what is being described above would have been called "Snake POOP"

http://home.nc.rr.com/ac4zo/articles/poop.html

Anyways, back to the present day, the FCC recently had a somewhat relevent
opinion here on the matter

http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2004/03/03/100/

Oh, you mean like......the operating mode does not matter? *(Snicker)*

Hollingsworth issues interference reminder
FCC Special Counsel for Enforcement Riley Hollingsworth says no Amateur
Radio stations are exempt from the requirement to avoid unnecessarily
interfering with ongoing communications. "It is very important for all
stations, including automated ones, to realize that they are responsible for
any interference caused when they come on top of existing communications,"
Hollingsworth said in response to a recent inquiry. 'There are no exemptions
for automated stations." FCC Part 97 Amateur Service rules generally address
interference with other communications in §97.101(d): "No amateur operator
shall willfully or maliciously interfere with or cause interference to any
radio communication or signal." An amateur had written to Hollingsworth
alleging that what appear to be automated PACTOR stations routinely start
transmitting atop PSK31 QSOs on 40 and 30 meters. The amateur also contacted
one of the PACTOR stations in an effort to "dialogue about it not just
complain." Hollingsworth expressed the hope that all involved could work
things out. He also points out that stations responding to automated
interrogations are equally responsible for not causing interference. "It
doesn't mean the frequency is clear merely because they were interrogated by
another station," he told ARRL this week. "It's a two-way responsibility."

I was talking to KE4NYV last night and came up with the idea of combining
the 2m TX part of pocket tracker with John Hansen's TNC-X.... and adding
the receiver out of a numeric pager as a receiver. This would be such a
small setup that it would fit in a small hammond box and would provide you
with a complete USB TNC which included a 200mW RF aprs transceiver. Well,
maybe 100mW given that you can only get 5v from USB...

Did anyone tell them to build the GPS into the d*mn radio!
Everything in the universe will have an embedded GPS before ham radios at
this rate :(

That is DEFINITELY the way to go! At least, for systems that can
have the luxury of an interface card.

Ah, but I think YOU are missing the market.

ESPECIALLY with HAMs. HAMs will buy anything that's cheap. A lot of
projects are nothing but making old junk work. In fact, of the HAMs that I
know that play with GPS, less than 1/4 of them do so with new laptops. Or
new anything. I would venture to say that only half of them have bought
new GPS units, most were used to buy they cheap.

So, I'm not saying don't buy the new USB only laptop, and I'm not saying
that a new USB only GPS wouldn't sell. I'm saying that it's sales will be
predominately to the 'package' crowd that does by new stuff. And not to
the 'HAM hacker' crowd.

If you market is to the HAM hacker crowd, then it's a big mistake. If you
want to kiss off the HAM hackers and only market to the guys with tons of
disposable income that always get the latest and greatest Sony Vios with
USB only, then fine.

But I'll bet it will be a long time till you start seeing any kinds of
numbers out there for people doing trackers with USB interfaces...

Hi Wes!

The Commtrak units consists of an ADI HT, (three power levels up to 5 watts,
any vhf frequency, a receiver) an Oncore GPS mated to a custom made TT3.
The entire unit fits in a 6"L x 4"W x 2.5"H Radio Shack plastic box.
They also comply with all part 97 rules!

I bought one of these and then built a similar unit using the TT3 with an
external Trimble GPS.
I have just completed building one with the OpenTracker. It will use an
external GPS unit...Garmin V.

It is my opinion the CommTrak unit is the most complete APRS unit on the
market at this time. I have not seen any others on the market. If people
are looking for a complete unit, ready to go, it is an option.
It is a basic APRS tracking unit. It does not have an APRS data display or
mapping. I like the design, and I use it when I build my own units with
Moving Map (MM) displays....which for tactical tracking....is the best way
to go right now.

Here is a breakdown on the cost of my last unit.

ADI HT: $50.00
OpenTracker (Built): 52.00
Radio Shack case and misc parts: 9.00
Garmin V GPS: 261.00
External GPS antenna: 24.00
Mobile Antenna: 36.00
                                                _______
                                        TOTAL: $432.00
                                                =======

I could have saved more money, if I would have invested more time into the
project. I think the Commtrak units cost $350 complete.

So, there are a few more ideas!

Jim, WA6OFT
