Subject: New maps...

Been very busy with other things, but finally making a little progress on
mapping issues.

Thanks to EI8IC I now have world-wide satellite/relief maps available.
These came to me as 5 degree square 600x600 pixel GIFs, which findU uses to
produce a seamless map of the world, as I do for the toporama maps. There
is now a fourth map on the find.cgi page demonstrating these maps. For some
places (for example South Florida) they are cool beyond words:

http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=k4hg-8

However, for areas without coastlines or mountains, they are much less
valuable:

http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=W0NWS-3

Once I get around to combining these with a political/interstate
highway/city name overlay, they should be good enough to use as the third
map, taking some of the heat off APRSworld.

These maps can be used by any application that can use geo files over the
net, I expect very shortly after this announcement to hear that xastir has
been updated to use them! The URL for the geo file interface is very
similar to the toporama:

http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/relief.cgi?lat=41.25&lon=-95.94

or

http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/relief.cgi?call=k4hg-8

They can also take the zoom parameter, for example within my plot cgi:

http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/plot.cgi?call=*-11&geo=http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin
/relief.cgi?call=wa0d-11|zoom=.1

Enjoy!

Oops, should have done more careful checking, there seems to be a problem
with VK maps, will look into it and fix it tonight...

Subject: OpenTracker, now with more Open
From: "Scott Miller" <scott@3xf.com>

The OpenTracker firmware is now available under the terms of the Modified
BSD license, and as such is now officially OSI recognized Open Source
software.

Note that this ISN'T the same thing as the GPL. There's no requirement to
make derivative works open as well. That's just because of my personal
feelings on open source, and I'm not interested in getting into the GPL vs.
BSD debate again. In short, the license says you've got to give credit
where credit is due, that I retain the copyright, and you can't use my name,
or the names of any other contributors, to endorse derived products without
permission.

I'd also like to thank everyone who's contributed to the project through
testing, documentation, programming, and design advice. I appreciate all
the help.

Scott

OK, I think it is fixed...sure would be easier if the earth had turned out
to be flat, or at least if we all lived in the same hemisphere ;-)

Anyway to make this feature an option? It works great at home on broadband
but dialup (via the cellphone) takes forever to load.

OK, add &norelief=1 to your URL:
