APRSsig-
I would like to set up a digipeater and need some assistance. I have been a
tracking user for the past 2 years and would like to help extend coverage
in my area via my home station.
I have a decent gain vertical up about 25' running from an old workhorse
Kenwood TR-7950. I also have a decent Internet broadband connection driven
by a Windows XP box. My TNC is ancient but functional, an old Heath HK-21
pocket packet running at 1200 bps. Technology religion aside, this is all I
have to play with for now.
Questions:
* I would like to start out by reporting to Steve Dimse's site any APRS
packets that I hear. (there's maybe only 1/minute that I hear) I have read
the directions included in WinAPRS, and I must be the dumbest guy in this
hobby, but I can't figure out how to do this.
* Once I get this working, I would like to then start transmitting to
others in my local area to advertise the fact that I have the capability to
accept packets bound for Steve. (or wherever they are meant for) I'm
assuming that this would be a parameter within WinAPRS but I'm not sure if
I'm a RELAY, a WIDE, an IGATE, or what.
I would appreciate any advice that you can provide. Please copy my email
address in your reply.
thanks!

First, what you are asking about is how to gate RF data to and from the
Internet, better known as an IGate. Digipeating is something done,
primarily, on RF and is basically a digital repeater (hence the name,
digipeater). I will address your email from the standpoint of how to
set up an IGate.
I cannot answer your setup question for WinAPRS as I do not currently
use that particular software as an IGate. However, do make sure you are
using the latest version as earlier versions did something called "Mic-E
translation" which is now discouraged on the Internet. Also, you must
be a registered user to gate packets to the Internet.
Steve Dimse's site, findu.com, gets its data from APRS-IS (the APRS
network over the Internet). To provide an APRS feed to APRS-IS, you
will need to connect to a port on an APRS-IS server. You can find
information on these servers at http://www.aprs-is.net/aprsservers.htm
Note that many clients, including WinAPRS, will tend to be overwhelmed
by the data feed coming from APRS-IS. I would therefore recommend
connecting to a filtered feed (normally port 14580) on a javAPRSSrvr
server to restrict the amount of data seen by your WinAPRS. You can
find more information on setting a server filter at
http://www.aprs-is.net/javAPRSSrvr/javaprsfilter.htm and
http://www.aprs-is.net/javAPRSSrvr/serveradjunct.htm
If you are setting up a bidirectional IGate (gating both from and to
RF), then you may want to change your symbol (icon) to a gateway (an
ampersand character) with an I overlay. Your path should be discrete to
your nearest WIDEn-n digipeater to provide solid area coverage. Do not
gate TO RF if there is another 24/7 gateway nearby without coordinating
with that operator first. Gating FROM RF (to APRS-IS) is fine as the
servers dupe check out multiple occurrences of the same data. However,
multiple nearby IGates gating TO RF will tend to create collisions
making all of the packets being gated to RF unusable.
Hope this helps.

Steve,
I have had the same problem for the last couple of weeks trying to set
up a station that would repeat into the APRS-IS internet.
I see you already have some answers so I will just comment on the
software.
The only difference is I am using MacAPRS and did not get any responses
to my queries as of yet but I have got it working.
Configuration should be similar however.
First forget the ports list it does not seem to work and only use the
TCP settings.
create a folder within the APRS folder called APRServe.txt with tab
separators as:
socal.aprs2.net 10150 internet receive only
This is a California server that does not dump the full APRS stream
just listens for data.
I assume you have the serial port and tnc configured for your setup.
Open VHF TNC
Under TCP connections/settings select "Feed (echo) local data to TCIP"
Then select the "internet receive only" link
You should see a connect message, remember you must be a registered
WinAprs user or the system will not validate you
Everything you see coming in and displayed should now echo tp APRS-IS
Some other server examples. All are bidirectional and will accept data.
aprsfl.net 10152 full feed
aprsfl.net 10153 full history
aprsfl.net 14579 East Coast
socal.aprs2.net 10150 Receive only
Hope this helps,

Hello All,
For your information.
There is a new PocketAPRS map, this time for Hawaii. This map is also
usable with APRS/CE, Xastir, MacAPRS and WinAPRS.
I build the map on request of Wayne Carvalho, since pocketAPRS maps of
Hawaii are hard to find. I did not have a good source, but with the help of
the excellent program GPS Trackmaker (<http://www.gpstm.com/>) by Odilon
Ferreira J=FAnior, I was able to do something about this. GPS TrackMaker is
not only able to read the maps provided by the Digital Chart of the World
Server (<http://www.maproom.psu.edu/dcw/>) but also capable of saving these
maps in WinAPRS format (!). Once in WinAPRS format I was able to convert
them to pocketAPRS maps. Note that the DCW maps are not recent, new roads
may be missing.
You can find the new map, with other maps, on:
http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~pe1dnn/
or
http://home.hetnet.nl/~pe1dnn/
(You may have to reload the map if you have a cached copy).
Kind regards,
Henk.

Hello there!
Has anybody ever used TH-D7 with the LOWRANCE iFINDER PRO GPS receiver? Are
they "talking" together fine? I am about to buy such a GPS receiver.
Thank you!

Is this true for James Jefferson's aprsworld.net site too? Or are there
different feeds?
I'm asking because I've seen packets show up on one site but not the
other (can't recall the particulars).
Thanks and 73,

There should not be any difference between the raw data on the two sites,
sometimes this has pointed out bugs in the parsing software, but without
particulars it is impossible to say anything more. If you see anything on
APRSworld that is not on findU, please feel free to let me know...
