Second went down and it took a couple of tries, but I now have my
connection to third up.

I can ping first and fourth, but get no response at all from second
and third.

Who's on first.
What's on second.
I don't know is on third.

We're struggling with this too. (NEWPRT and LINCON digis) are up and
running with Peet and KPC3+'s, but it doesn't produce an APRS spec
compliant packet and the Kenwoods don't copy it. So, my first approach
was to install the WXTrak from Byonics on the site and make it do the
weather packets, which is pretty close. However it sends the weather in
one packet, and the position in another. Byon said he has that on his
list to change when he gets a chance. We're hoping for the best solution
of a single packet with both.

To that end, we're in the preliminary stages of designing a PIC based
solution. This device would take input from one of 4 or 5 weather
stations supported on the RS-232 port, parse it, add the position,
construct an APRS compatible packet with position and weather (or
alternately an 'easy to read on any terminal' or a comma delimited
format) and force it out the RS-232 port to be fed to the TNC.

We've somewhat decided on what functions it would have, and are
constructing some very basic documentation to see how it would go
together. Next is to solicit support and see if it is of interest to
anyone else, and then move forward with the code to make it happen.

It's just a plan at this point, curious if it would work for most folks
trying to accomplish this.

If you want to know what I would do (like you want to hear what one
more guy has to say.) I would take an old 486 or better and install
your favorite linux, aprsd, and connect your TNC and radio. Assuming
you have a verified version of MacAPRS you can connect to the internal
aprsd machine and it will spit out what you transmit, and feed back
what it hears. You can connect up as many clients as you desire in this
fashion. Mac/WinAPRS xastir, whatever. I do it here at my office witch
has a DSL and I do the same thing from anywhere I have an internet
connection. I connect with MacAPRS or Xastir depending on what machine
I'm on.

Assuming you don't already have an aprsd Igate in your area and you
have a permanent connection to the internet you could also provide this
service to the other local users in your area.

It appears second is either down or inaccessible. First was down at the
time of your original post (see http://first.aprs.net:14501). Third is
up and was up at the time of your post. However, with first and second
down, third got most of their connections causing it to apparently max
out on port 23 connects. Fourth has been up and accessible during the
entire time although it may have also maxed out on port 23 connects.

This is actually the searchable archive:

http://www.tapr.org/cgi-bin/wilma/aprssig

Unfortunately, even though it has repeatedly been reported to TAPR, the new
management has decided that they would only archive SPAM, and not bother with
APRS messages since the end of October 2003.

I have been able to telnet to fourth.aprs.net port 23 every time I have
tried this afternoon. What port are you trying?

Subject: Changes in UI-Webserver setup.
From: "Stephen H. Smith" <WA8LMF2@aol.com>
Date: Thu, 18 Mar 2004 15:52:02 -0800

After posting about my triple-instance UI-View webserver setup a few
days ago, I was flooded with hits. Then quite abruptly the activity, as
shown in the UI-Server monitor window, dropped to nothing. I
discovered that my cable modem IP address which had been unchanged for
over 9 months had suddenly changed, thereby breaking the numeric address
I had posted.

I have now added a page to my main website on AOL's server that links
to the (hopefully current) purely numeric IP address of the personal web
server here at home. Go to:

      http://members.aol.com/wa8lmf/webserver

and click on the link provided. I have also provided "stealth" links
on my main home page at:

http://members.aol.com/wa8lmf and on my APRS page at:
      http://members.aol.com/wa8lmf/aprs

The wood-colored patch on each of these pages is a link to the webserver
page. (Since this is a sort of experimental thing that may not always
be up, I didn't want to publish a normal visible text link on these pages.)
