Recent versions of APRSdos now remember the BACKUP file map, not the CONFIG
file map. The BACKUP file is saved every time you properly exit and select
"B" for the filename. Or whever you hit FILE-SAVE and select "B". But
the END key should always take you to the CONFIG file default... (I
hope)... de WB4APR, Bob

Running APRS863..
Just getting back into APRS after an absence of several years and have run
into a problem, even though I saved everything and it made the proper
C:\config.apr file when I boot up the program it ignores some of the
information, that is, it loads a default map, "RUN" map of Maryland, not
the one I saved.. When I hit "1" for the world map, there is my house in
the right location.
Question: How can I get it to come up with the right map?

Yes! Please use the "complete position/WX" format and not the separate
positionless weather and weatherless position reports that some clients
use. The two separate packets are an anathma in APRS as they reuire aprior
knowledge before either one of the packets have any value.
APRS was intended for every single packet to stand-alone and to contain all
necessary information in one packet at a time. The original combined
"position/WX" format was designed that way.

Any idea if Byon's WXTrax conforms to that? We're working on adding one of
those at each KPC weather digi and doing weather that way so the Kenwoods
can decode it. It looks like at first glance that the Kenwood won't
display the weather data without valid position data as well.
Shouldn't we always be using the complete position/WX on a weather station?

I need some help with a problem I am trying to remotely diagnose.
About a month ago my mountaintop Digi quit working. When it failed it
noticed that it was working fine one day, and then it died for almost
EXACTLY 24 hours. It then worked for about 24 more hours and then quit
working again.
Over the weekend someone went to the site and dug down to the cabinet (snow
depth was over the 6ft chain link fence and barbed wire). When they opened
the cabinet the message light was on. The TNC is still decoding packets,
but it is not sending beacons or digipeating anything.
So the question is: If the mailbox is full can and will this cause the
"failure" I am seeing?
It is a LONG trip up to the site in the winter and I plan on going next
week, but want to know what to take (my laptop to re-configure) or another
TNC and Radio. It is a LONG hike in winter!!! (Nice drive in the Summer!)

And there it is... Right on page 65... Gees, and I have read the spec
before! Oh well, I'll go and change it at the site this week.

Is anyone using, or can anyone point me in the proper direction, a PDA that
supports 802.11b or g wireless protocol that someone is using for APRS?
Where I live (East Carolina University) we have a lot of 802.11b wireless
access points (WAPs) and I would like to have a PDA that can access these
WAPs and maybe have an onboard GPS in the PDA for tracking purposes.
An all-in-one PDA with 802.11b and GPS and running one of the PDA APRS
packages would be fun! Anyone help with me with this?

An Ipaq and a 802.11x card will do it:

I don't think this one has a CF slot:

If this has expansion, then you could run APRS over cellular data:

Try the Dell Axim X3 with WiFi and Pharos GPS. I hear it works OK. I'll let
u know in about 2-3 days when mine arrives.

Wow! A wireless GPS unit going to a wireless PDA! But the price tag is a
bit much!!! I'm still looking... I do like the PDA... It appears to be
exactly what I'm looking for at a decent price and from a company I like.
Thanks,

Uh, if it were me, even if people were SURE that could cause the problem,
I'd swap it out with another one reconfigured. Then try to duplicate the
problem with the removed unit.
You really want to risk having to make another trip up there? Well,
unless it's skiable terrain and you're a skier. Then maybe you're
looking for an excuse!
