There's a new firmware version available for the OpenTracker at
http://n1vg.net/opentracker.
In my opinion, one of the coolest features of the Byonics TinyTrak3 is the
ability to switch between two configurations using a jumper. People have
been able to do a lot of cool stuff with that like automatically change
configurations when they start their car, or when a balloon experiment
lands. This is a feature the OpenTracker's been lacking until now.
The new firmware adds a similar capability, but it's implemented a bit
differently. The default setup works basically the same, in that installing
a jumper switches between the two configurations. The setup program can
change that behavior, though.
Each second, the tracker checks up to six parameters to see if it needs to
change configs. The tests are:
Jumper 3 on or off
ADC0 (temperature) > x or <= x
ADC1 (batt. voltage) > x or <= x
ADC2 (user input) > x or <= x
Altitude > x or <= x
Speed > x or <= x
To illustrate, the default setup is:
Config1: J3 On
Config2: J3 Off
So when you're in config1 and you install the jumper, it switches to
config2. When you're in config2 and you remove the jumper, it switches to
config1.
Multiple paramters can be tested, and they're OR'ed together. For example:
Config1: ADC0 <= 127 or Altitude > 10000
Config2: ADC1 <= 170 or J3 On
This would start out in config1, and switch if the board temperature dropped
below about 250K or the altitude went above 10,000 meters. It'd stay in
config2 until the battery voltage dropped below 10 volts or the jumper was
set. Eventually the appropriate unit conversions will be done in the setup
program... for now you've got to do some math.
This replaces the "don't use path above x meters" settings and has obvious
applications for balloons. I'm not sure what else it might be used for, but
then that's the point - it's meant to be flexible.
Anyway, it's available for download now. Plus, this update adds a version
indicator that'll (eventually) let the setup program determine if it's the
right version so you don't inadvertently screw things up with mismatched
versions. For now, it's still best to wipe the configuration whenever you
upgrade the firmware.

Hi,
The maps of find-us.cgi are a great sevice since the problems we are
faced with Vicinity.com/MapBlast...
However, it would seem to be even better if the "range" difference
between the top map and middle map were expanded more, maybe even split
the difference between the top and bottom ranges.. Just adding another
couple of streets between top and middle is just not sufficient enough
in my opinion..
Thanks for reading and consideration..

Roger that, I'd like it too if possible.

Byon: the new TT3 v 1.1 sounds great! I was all ready to plunk down for
it, but since you announce the surf mount TT3, I may wait. Aboutish
when will the surf mount TT3 be 'on the street' ?

ps. thanks for the price roll back, I think it's really cool you can
design/produce something like the TT as inexpensively as you do!

And the "difference" should be geometric and not arithmetic. Thus if the
range scale of the first one is 2 miles and the 3rd one is 128 miles, then
the middle one should be the geometric middle which would be the 16 mile
range scale.
In other words the ratio between the 1st and 2nd and then the 2nd and 3rd
should be the same ratio. In my example it is a factor of 8. I can't tell
what the range scale is of the present maps, since no Range Scale is
provided...

Same connectors, or different? I find the DB9s wind up taking more room
than the board itself.
I've got no plans for a surface mount OpenTracker at the moment, at least
beyond what surface mount might be required for the next (bigger) version.
If I did make one, it'd probably be a SIPP package like the Basic Stamp to
make it easy to integrate with other stuff.

I'm working on some APRS (and OpenTRAC) options for the local SAR team.
They're using Motorola GP68 handhelds. The speaker/mic connection looks
like a standard 3.5 mm / 2.5 mm pair - haven't checked to see if it's
standard spacing yet. Has anyone used these before? I'm not sure about the
PTT signalling requirements. I managed to scrounge up a service manual, and
it includes a mic schematic. The plug tip goes through an inductor, the PTT
switch, another inductor, to the positive lead of the mic. The negative
lead of the mic goes through an inductor, another inductor, and do the plug
sleeve. Across the two sides, between the inductors, are three capacitors
in parallel.
Mic+ --- L2 --+--+---+--- S1 --- L1 --- Tip
C1 C2 C3
Mic- --- L3 --+--+---+---------- L4 --- Sleeve
Does this look like a standard setup? I've never looked at a speaker mic
schematic before so I don't know how they're normally laid out.
Any information on interfacing with GE Phoenix VHF mobiles would be
appreciated, too.

As has been mentioned here before, these are the three scales available by
name. There is supposedly a way to request an arbitrary scale map, but I
have not been able to make it work. I'm waiting for Jim to release his geo
file interface, not only to improve the range scales but also to fix things
like plotting of multiple stations that are still broken because of the map
change.

I may have asked this before, but can someone send me a raw dump from a
WM-918 weather station? Preferably several minutes to a few hours' worth.
I'd like to get a basic weather encoding version of the OpenTracker going.
Thanks...
