I am pleased to announce that TinyTrak3 v1.1 is now available at
http://www.byonics.com/tinytrak ! This new version sports the
follwing new features:
- 300 Baud output for HF packet. Uses tones 1600 Hz and 1800 Hz.
- NMEA output. Now, in addition to MIC-E and APRS text out, you can
output in NMEA $GPRMC format. The following is an example output:
$GPRMC,201050,A,3610.9912,N,11516.4034,W,000,005,240799,,*0B This may
allow use with some commercial software, such as Fugawi.
- Higher position resolution. With NMEA output, I am able to increase
position resolution 100X (2 more digits on each axis) assuming the
GPS supports it.
- Remove CQ destination. CQ is no longer used as a dest callsign.
It has been replaces with APT311 (APRS TinyTrak3 version 1.1)
- Separate Status text. Due to problems with status text not showing
up at findu.com, there is now an option to send you status text as a
separate packet (immeadiately after the position), rather than being
appended to the end of the position packet.
- Config support for COM ports up to COM8.
A existing TinyTrak3, TinyTrakII, or TinyTrak can be upgraded to this
new version by replacing the old chip with a new TinyTrak3 v1.1 chip.
With this new version, I have decided to lower TinyTrak3 prices!
Kits are now $xx, Kits with cases are now $xx, Built and Tested
TinyTrak3s are $xx or $xx with a case, and built gender changer /
null modem adapters are now $x.
Thanks to all my TinyTrak3 v1.1 beta testers, and all other users of
TinyTrak3 for your continued support!
Byon, N6BG
P.S. A surface mount TinyTrak3 is coming soon! 1" X 1" at 0.1 ounce.

It's been brought to my attention that I should have provided more
information on Hamcom. Embarassing really, I know better than that.
Hamcom is a regional hamfest based in Arlington, TX. The 2004 dates are
Friday, June 18 and Saturday, June 19. Attendance is on the order of 5000
to 8000 attendees. For more info on Hamcom, see: http://www.hamcom.org/
Meanwhile, I've added links to the presentations that we already have.
Comments or critiques are welcome.

There has always been an interest! I will sponsor it and get hardware IF
someone can find a site.
MUST be a REAL site >300ft to be of interest and to be able to make it back
to Houston.

Is anyone using the PK232 as a digi? A friend of mine wants to set it up at
a commerical site to function as a local digi. This 232 has had all of the
modifications performed on it, yet I still wondor if it will be a good
choice. The proposed site will have very good coverage - it will hear many
distant digi's, so dupes may be a major concern.
I would rather see a KPC-3 at the site. Any opinions from the group?

The PK232 has absolutely NO APRS-specific features in it's firmware. It
can only function stand-alone as a simple dumb RELAY or WIDE digi (by
setting it's alias to these names). It can't do WIDEn-N callsign
substitution, relace a WIDE in the path statement with it's own
callsign, or do dupe suppression.
If you are willing to use a PC connected to the '232s serial port, you
COULD give it modern APRS smarts with any APRS client program (ideally
running the unit in KISS mode) or the digipeater-only Digi-NED
application. Digi-NED can implement a smart WIDEn-N digi while running
off a floppy on a 286-class DOS clunker.
Probably the cheapest quickest way to go is forget about the PK232,
scrounge up an old TNC2 (i.e. MFJ-127x-series) and give it a "brain
transplant" by installing the freeware UI-Digi firmware .
UI-Digi transforms the TNC2 into a modern APRS-specific digipeater with
dupe supression, smart SSID routing, multiple beacons with different
paths and time intervals, full WIDEn-N callsign substitution, etc.
Better yet, your station's callsigns, coordinates and APRS symbol,
beacon messages and paths, etc become part of the programmed eprom.
They are literally "frozen in stone" in the custom-programmed eprom and
can't be lost from a power failure, dead battery or accidental reset.
