Quite a crack, that.
Seriously, are any statistics available showing what percentage of APRS
users use WinAPRS vs. APRS+ vs. UI-View32 vs...? If available, I'd sure
like to see it.
Thanks all,

Sorry about that... That is so unlike me, too! :)
Anyway, I really wanted to do just that so I could find out what percentage
of users use what. Yahoogroups has a polling feature, but that won't really
work here.
I tell you what, let me figure out an easier way to do it and I'll do the
survey.

Attention all APRS Users. By popular demand, I am conducting a survey.
Please send a new email to christensene@mail.ecu.edu with [APRS SURVEY] as
the subject line.
In the message, include the client software that you are using.
Like this...
UIView
Xastir
DOSAPRS
I will run this survey for one week or until the messages stop. Once I have
all this data, I'll figure out how to get all the numbers (I think I have an
easy way) and will post the data to the SIGs and to the internet. Duplicate
emails will be filtered out and deleted. Any email that has any extra stuff
in it will also be deleted. If you don't have [APRS SURVEY] in the subject
line, the email will not be counted.
Thank you for your participation.

Then I think he missunderstood it.
What many people overlook is that the BASE 91 conversion was designed with
multipler constants that kept the result to SINGLE PRECISION if they
*ignore* the LSB. Ignoring the LSB was *intended* for Microcontrollers.
This still gives them the *same* precison as already exists in the APRS
protocol (about 80 feet). The only reason to use the LSB in the XXXxYYYy
(the little "x" and "y" bytes is if the PIC wants to transmit precision to
1 foot.
I doubt any PIC controller needs that accuracy.
Again, the Base91 format and coeficients multipleiers were chosen so that
only the XXX_YYY_ part of the format needed to be decoded with single
precision intigers to yield the same precision as already exists in APRS.
This can be done by simply subtracting a constant, and then multiplying by
a constant (shift and add). Only the LSB is needed if precision down to
one foot is required. Even then it can still be done in single precision
and just added to the result.

I should mention that I sent this out to the APRSSIG, the UI-View Listserv,
and the HF-APRS listserv. If you know of any others, please forward this
message on to them so we can get as many participants as possible!

Byon N6BG and I did a little experiment on this at DCC. By datamining that
aprsworld database we were able to generate statistics on what sort of
stations were on the air.
If somebody we to just look at the destination address you could probably
determine software and versions for most non MIC-E applications.
And for fun I've made such a list. It has destination address and number of
stations that used that destination address last time they transmitted.
http://db.aprsworld.net/tmp/destinations.out
The SQL query used for this is:
select raw.destination,count(lastposition.packet_id) from lastposition, raw
where raw.packet_id=lastposition.packet_id AND raw.destination like 'AP%'
GROUP BY destination;
I'm sure somebody can load it into a spreadsheet and make some pretty
statistics.

That didn't take too long!
However, the destination address of APRS is the most common, and, AFAIK, is
used by ALL software at some point. Or maybe none. At least, I can't
recognize what software defaults to the address of APRS.
