I initially developed my OpenTracker as a demonstration platform for the
OpenTRAC protocol and added basic APRS support for compatibility. It seems
clear now, though, that it's going to see more APRS use than I originally
thought, and I'll probably be adding compressed position format soon. Of
course, that means more complexity and more program space used, and there's
not much to spare.
One way to help compensate for that would be to drop support for the APRS
uncompressed format entirely. How much of an impact would this be? I know
some people like to be able to read the packets directly - other than
decreased readability the major problem with compressed format is the
reduced course resolution. Who would I be hurting by removing the
uncompressed format?

One thing to remember is that not all APRS software "reads" compressed
format correctly...

It's been in the spec forever though. Update your APRS software or
switch to a different one that handles it.

Mine works as it should, thanks. I was simply pointing out a possible
problem in going to compressed format.

I can't answer for everyone, but here are some of MY reasons for running my
home station 24/7 (with a 30 minute beacon rate by the way). Not in any
priority order:
1. Messaging: Other users in the area can send me messages anytime. I
know you could do this on packet, but why bother? I bought the TNC for
APRS.
1a. Related: getting any bulletins (including gated weather bulletins)
that come up while I'm out of the shack.
2. Maintaining "situational awarness". Seeing who's in the area, mobiles
passing through and weather trends. The ability to re-run a history log if
something happens while I'm not there.
3. Gives me a known station to ping and and message for APRS demos
(impromptu and otherwise).
4. Provides "gap filler" for mobile stations on the nearby Interstate
(MYALIAS: RELAY. Note, I do NOT use RELAY in my path, I go direct to the
local Digipeaters).
5. My wife (licensed) can see where I am and either call me on voice or
message my D-700 if I'm mobile, or page me commercially if she can see that
I'm not mobile.
6. If my station is not on the air and does not respond to queries, then I
know I have a possible problem at home (power outage longer than the
batteries can handle, equipment failure, etc.)
7. Having the station up and running all the time means I don't have to
wait for boot up, intialization, etc. if I want to jump on for a quick
message, check local activity, or during an ARES or SKYWARN activations.
8. I'm using a 486 DX2-66 with 4mb proprietary RAM, and a 200 MB harddrive
running APRSMAX on DOS. Since I don't have a boat, and my doors already
have stops, what else am I going to do with it? ;-)
Most of these could be done without a regular beacon, but, in this area at
least, I don't see that one position and one status beacon every 30
minutes is excessive use of the local digipeater network, so why not? As
long as my beacon rate and path are not excessive, I don't see any problem.
As usual, the is all MHO and YMMV

Just came across the AGWTracker page at
http://www.raag.org/sv2agw/tracker.htm. Looks nice. Why haven't I heard of
this before? Has anyone used it? What maps does it use?

There are other things to consider though. For example, while I'm pushing
for it in the HamHUD, it doesn't support compressed packets as of yet. It
does support MIC-E, so I for one would be in favor of dropping the
plain-text so long as MIC-E is there.. If it went to compressed only then
I wouldn't be interested in the product until everything I own supports it.

What do you own that doesn't support it?

For one, the HamHUD doesn't decode compressed packets properly, as far as I
know.
For another, WinAPRS doesn't decode it properly. If I'm using UI-View,
with my symbol set to a HOUSE, and sending compressed packets, WinAPRS
shows an island with a palm tree on it.

I wouldn't judge anything in APRS by limitations in WinAPRS.

Scott:
The best version of compressed format position reporting I have seen is
OpenTRAC.
The problem with the APRS compressed format, is it is Base 91, and it is a
real pig to code up on a microcontroller. Ask Steve Bragg of the HamHud
group why he doesn't support the APRS compressed format. He already tried,
and it blew his code space budget. Now, things might be different with the
18F part they are using, but you get my point.
Since (apparently) not every GUI supports the APRS compressed format, and
that would be anyones goal, ask yourself which one is easier to support.
The road less traveled is often the best.
