Would someone please give me an example when higher than WIDE2-2 should be
ever use? I can't think of any time.
>>>just recently i was testing out my Kenwood D7 and a pocket track
miniature tracker. I had to jack up from WIDE, to WIDE2-2, 3-3 and finally
4-4 got me i gated. I'm in Denver which is pretty cosmopolitan for APRS
applications.... but.... one wide area digipeater is currently down. I
normally beacon WIDE, or WIDE2-2 and just get igated when I can.

Welcome to APRS, KC4PDF!
My advice, for setting a path, start small, and grow as you deem necessary.
If you are running a 'house beacon' I doubt that unattended operation with
more than a packet per hour, or even a packet every two hours has a whole
lot of value added. If you add a weather station that's a whole different
story. If you're mobile, that's a whole different story, too. In truth I
don't see a lot of value in house beacons, but that's just because I only
operate and only care about mobile operations. I know where my house is, I
don't need to beacon its location to the world. You've seen (and you'll
see) a lot of heated opinions here but ultimately you'll have to make your
own operating decisions. Like any other part of ham radio, operate with
consideration of others. Now understandably there can be a lot of
confusion/questions about what constitutes considerate operation on APRS.
Since ham radio is a shared resource, be suspicious of anyone's advice that
boils down to "you should totally minimize your transmissions to make room
for mine".

I think that we left out blue hills inovation.
http://www.blue-hills-innovations.com/ Nice source for already built cables
at a decent price. dakota

Steve,
I did not see mention of which Garmin unit. For the circular 4-pin
connectors, do a search for purple connector. This is a goo source for
the connector. For the eTrex units, I have made up a connector with some
parts around the house that works well.
I can send the eTrex cable design around the 29th when I get back to my
home computer if you wish for the design. I built up a connector, took
good pics and measurements. Material is an old credit card, dremel
(works better than xacto), wire, and some Centronix connector pins.
I used regular wire.

I never did see the purpose of sitting 24/7 taking up digi time sending
out a stationary location like a house.
If a ham wants to get your address /locations its up on qrz.com
if you are at the keyboard live and running aprs that makes sense to send
out you location as long as your status text indicates you are live at the
keyboard.
I have to go back to packet mode to find anyone to go KB to KB with since a
lot of hams are running a one way beacon device with no way to communicate
with them.
I still like the idea of a talkback frequency when running any aprs , and
the frequency you monitor for talkback should be in your text beacon .
find my current location at http://map.findu.com/kd8s

APRS Speech:
I am working on a speech module for the next APRS satellite. But I want
the protocol to be completely consistent with our current APRS "speech"
protocol.
I dont think the "speak-this" character got into the APRS Spec, so as I
nail this down, I want to ask other APRS authors to make sure we have a
consistent implementation.
My current understanding of the APRS SPEECH is that any MESSAGE to a
recepient that begins with "%" should be spoken (if a speech module is
present.) This should work on the Kenwoods that have the speech chip.
My concern is whether the "%" casues the entire text to be spoken or only
the WORD following it. I also remember that we had that definition as well.
so that we could only speak some KEY words in text and not always all of
it.
People with D700's with speech modules can test this for us by sending it
stuff... (of course the Kenwood only has a very limited vocabulary and
only can SPELL most words. In fact, I think you have to send it %XX as a 2
byte word pointer to get it to say one of it's limited words.
I have lost ALL my archives and so cannot go back to old stuff to find out
what I documented...
Unfortunatley, the speech module we are using is close to $200 ($170 in 10
quantities)
We will b e asking Kantronics to add the small code changes to pass only
SPEECH out the serial port for our Satelite KPC-3 TNC... and if it is
useful, we may be able to get them to include it in future TNC's
Hence, the desire to make sure we are all using the % "speak-this"
characeter the same way...

Speaking of archives, did anyone notice the TAPR *SIG archives are still
only archiving SPAM and not the SIG?
This is history, both the mundane and important. Can anyone give them a
hand in getting this fixed? ( I don't have a clue as to how lyris works,
otherwise I'd offer to help them)

I believe that it speaks the entire sentence.
