Help, just installed ver 2.22 and find that I have one line of info on TNC
page. It updates but doesn't retain old data, as if it needs a list lenth
set, or carrage rtn, linefeed or something. Older versions 2.14, 2.21 etc
did not do this on my "XP" machine. Can someone point me in the right
direction?
Thanks, Mike

Simple!
It would be used if you want someone to see your location, speed, direction
of travel, or WX data etc... via RF and they are 3, 4, or 5 Digi hops away.
RF, what Amateur Radio used to be.

While you are correct that this is not a good path for a balloon, I think
you'd do well to rethink your position on this path for terrestrial
stations. In some areas it takes 5 or MORE hops to get out.

The toporama code on the server now will grab portions from up to four
images to produce the desired map, no need to look at blank edges.
The maps are not perfect, my guess is they were generated at different
times with different revisions of the software, as some roads go from solid
orange to dotted orange at the border, and sometimes the topo lines don't
match up, mostly though, they look great:
<http://findu.com/cgi-bin/plot.cgi?call=*&geo=http://mm.aprs.net/toporama1.cgi?
lat=47.999|lon=-82.001|set=50>
You could see just the map the desired point occurs in with the nojoingrid=1
option:
<http://findu.com/cgi-bin/plot.cgi?call=*&geo=http://mm.aprs.net/toporama1.cgi?
nojoingrid=1|lat=47.999|lon=-82.001|set=50>

Depends on what "get-out" means. Doing a "nearby stations" on
MAP.FINDU.COM shows a 60 nearest neighbor ALOHA circle of more than 80
miles. And 4 digis at 6, 32, 54 and 70 miles. Assuming that he hits the
first one and second one, and then it hits the other two, it would seem
that the ideal path is 3-3, though 4-4 wouldnt seem to be offensive at all,
since it takes 4 or more just to hit his full aloha circle....

And if you and all your neighbors can tolerate the exponential
growth in the number of copies and load that results:
3-3 ==>21 copies
4-4 ==>36 copies
5-5 ==>57 copies
>RF, what Amateur Radio used to be.
And where we always use the least amount of power and resources to
communicate in respect to our fellow hams...
If someone wants his wife to see him 5 hops away, then he should use a
non-generic path of 5 hops. Just 5 copies, instead of flooding the network
with almost 10 times as many copies for the task...

Reality check. There are areas in Texas where WIDE5-5 is the appropriate
path if you want to hit an I-gate. That's the point Steve was trying to
make.
*There are areas in Texas where WIDE5-5 will not get you to an I-gate.*
Please don't discount the fact that there are tifferent digipeater and user
distributions and topologies simply because the East and West Coasts are
saturated. We've saturated cities, too. We're aware of the reasons for
limiting paths. We can do the math, we HAVE done the math, and we're
pretty decent RF guys.
You can model all you want. If the infrastructure requires a long path
to get somewhere, you use a long path.

Yes, exactly what I was trying to point out. This old idea of using the
same path for every part of the world has got to stop -- the world just
doesn't work that way.

This is my first post. I've been a member of this sig for sometime...just
lurking in the woodwork...learning and trying out things. To date I
activate my home QTH APRS capability only occasionally and have worked
through PCSAT a few times. I have yet to set up a mobile rig. One thing I
have learned from the extensive 'discussions' about PATHs is that , as a
fixed location, I need to minimize my exposure so as not to contribute to
the loading on the network unnecessarily. Soooo... my question is, what
is the absolute minimum path configuration I can use to enter the network,
primarily to watch the activity in the VA/WVA/DC/PA area? I'm running
WINAPRS with a TS2000.
Thanks,
Dave, KC4DPF
