But would you agree that there isn't a need to have a digipeater blasting
out a WIDE4-4?

OK, I think I've done what I need to on the Canadian maps.

zoom is now working (as well as I plan to make it work, anyway):

http://findu.com/cgi-bin/plot.cgi?call=*&geo=http://mm.aprs.net/toporama.cgi?
call=ve3xzt|zoom=2

http://findu.com/cgi-bin/plot.cgi?call=*&geo=http://mm.aprs.net/toporama.cgi?
call=ve3xzt|zoom=0.2

At smaller zoom values, the algorithm I use to determine which grids to plot
breaks down, but I'm not planning to fix it, as they are pretty useless below
zooms of 0.2 anyway...I'll add code to limit it at some point.

http://findu.com/cgi-bin/plot.cgi?call=*&geo=http://mm.aprs.net/toporama.cgi?
call=ve3xzt|zoom=0.05

I've added code to detect when a find.cgi request falls in an area covered
by these maps, and use them in place of the APRSworld maps. So far only
find.cgi has this code, but I will propagate it to other places as I get a
chance to.

http://findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=ve3xzt

If find.cgi is not showing these maps on a station within Canada, I'd like
to know now so Ican fix a problem before bad code ends up in a bunch of
places.

That's it for today, heading to Key West to drink with the monkees!

Thank You x many,Steve. So often Canada seems to be left out in the cold(no
pun intended), but you have put us on the map, in spades,(well, snow shovels
at least). A very cursory check of mobiles in my area shows the symbol for
VE1LV-9 changes to a black square in the top two maps and elsewhere it is a
vehicle. Perhaps indicative of something and 'just to let you know'. Thanks
again on behalf of we 'Canuks'.

Your choice of path depends on what you are trying to do (broadcast to
local area, get into an IGATE, etc.) The easiest thing to do that will
probably accomplish most goals is to send out a couple of packets
RELAY,WIDE and then look your call up on findu. Take a look at the raw
packet, if you are operating from home you will likely see a digi saw
your packet first. You can then specify that call specifically as your
path. Stations close to you will hear packets you send directly and the
digi will rebroadcast your packet to the presumably larger area it
covers. This will likely also put your packet on the net if the digi is
an IGATE or can be seen by one.

Raw packet:
KC9UMR-9>GPSLK,W0EEE-3,KC0IRJ-3,KM0R-3*,qAR,KM0R-1:$GPRMC,185634,V,3757.6024
,N,09146.0186,W,0.000,0.0,230204,1.2,E*79

my raw packet... but the map shows me across town from where i actually
am.... any ideas? I can't change the GPS, so i need to change it in the
TNC if it's possible...

If you look at the second map, I SHOULD be close to the "V" on Vienna...
(follow the red line to the left to Vichy Rd., and follow that up towards
the top of the map, Vienna is the road that connects to it on the left)

thanks,

The "V" in that $GPRMC string means that the data is invalid; AKA, your GPS
doesn't have a lock. Let it run for a few minutes and if it's still doing
that, make sure it has a clear view of the sky (many GPSs do not work well
indoors, if at all).

It's got a lock now...

I can't access the GPS to change settings... It's one of the Palm III
ad-on GPS units...i pulled the board out of it (it's a rand McNally unit)
and stuffed it in my dashboard. I have a few last things to clean up
(installing a jack so I can monitor the GPS data on my laptop, or any serial
device)... But other than that, I'm almost done with my trakcer...
Yayyy!!

Thanks for EVERYONE'S help!

No. Again, it depends on the location. Either of our local digis (BLKWTR
and MELROZ, which is currently down) usually needs at least 4 hops to get
to the nearest IGATE, and that seems to be the basic goal. Since MELROZ is
down, I am running an IGATE here in Clovis, and W5ALL runs one is Roswell,
about 100 miles away. If my IGATE is down, and W5ALL's is down, the
nearest IGATE is in Albuquerque, about 220 miles, and 4 or 5 hops away.

As I've said in the past, you would do well to try operating in a
particular location before you try making rules for that area.

Dave: If your only goal is to "Watch" you don't need a path. Your Path
does not affect the stations you receive. A path of WIDE would be a minimum
path you can use if you want to transmit. Play around with different paths
to see what happens. Also, check the stations around you to see what they
are using. Good luck and have fun. Don't be scared to put a path in. I
know watching the discussions on Paths on this sig can look very serious.
Jump on in, the waters fine!

And next time ask some questions on trackers. We'll get you going.

Yes, but this has been the heat of a lot of discussion... WHY is it
necessary to see a digipeater four, even two hops away when that is all it
does? So that one can sit back and say, "See, I'm on the internet!!!"?
Doesn't seem like that is a very good reason when you end up adding
significantly to the channel load.

I think you're missing the point I'm trying to convey. Out here in the
wide open spaces, THERE IS NO CHANNEL LOAD. Things are different where you
are. Allow people in other areas to run the network as they need to and
not according to some standard developed by someone in a highly populated
area.

BTW, I used to have a good friend in Greenville, named Lonnie Willer. I
believe he was an educator, do you know him?
