Subject: Canadian topo maps

Thanks to Adi, VA3ADI I've got the complete set (3.5 GB) of Canadian Topo
maps. I've finished processing (converting to PNG and generating GEO files)
the 250k set, the 50k is obviously larger (5 times to be specific ;-), and
will take longer to finish (probably overnight), even with horsepower of
the new server. Here is an example, with APRS activity overlaid with the
plot cgi:

http://findu.com/cgi-bin/plot.cgi?call=*&geo=http://mm.aprs.net/maps/geo/
toporama/b250k/03/031d.geo

These maps are too large to be routinely useful (1600x3200 pixels). I'll
write a cgi to grab sections of the maps at will, and eventually to combine
from different images should the desired section be near an edge or corner.
Wish I didn't have a life so I could work on this around the clock!

These maps are in the aprsmm directory, grab them if you want:

http://mm.aprs.net/maps/geo/toporama

These maps are a perfect example of why the GPL would be overly restrictive
if applied to the map portion of APRS Map Manager. These maps come from the
Canadian government, with a license that permits their use and
redistribution by APRS MM, findU, and the rest of APRS, but the license is
not the GPL. Were I to follow the suggestion to require maps be released
under the GPL I'd have to reject these maps, which would be a shame,
because they are very cool!

Two countries down, a few hundred to go ;-)
