Hello,
I am trying to figure out what SSID to use on my tracker. I am not sure if
there is an agrement for the use of different SSID. There is a webpage with
info regarding this? I haven't found it.
In NIcaragua we agreed to use the following:
-0 terminal
-1 pms/pbbs
-3 gateway for cross connection
-7 node
Any suggestion about what we have agreed over here?
I have seen that node connection uses SSID from 15 and above. Is that
correct? Also I have seen that aprspeed program for PIC-E use only one
digit for SSID.
I am specially concern about the implications for aprs software. There are
agreement on the symbols that a packet without the GPSxx path setting and
with a specific SSID will be on the screen? Any suggestion about what would
be a good ssid for mobiles to use?
Thanks in advance

hmmm...I see the map in the directory, but it never made it into the
database. Did you see any error messages when you submitted the map?
Where did these maps come from?
Since you have so many, I'll probably do a special program to import them
all without making you enter each one into the web form.

The problem is the same that I have with Richard Stallman. After eating
dinner with him for a week on a Geek Cruise, his true agenda became clear
to me. He is seeking power (the ability to make decisions for others) not
freedom (the ability to make decisions for oneself). I am not seeking
power, I have a hundred times more power than I want with my job...when you
attain power, it becomes very clear that the with the power comes
responsibility and scrutiny that (for me at least) far outweigh any
benefits that come from the power.
The unqualified clause you are asking would feel to me like a wielding of
power. I'd be asking people to give up more rights than is necessary for
the project at hand.
>If the project is supposed to be in the GPL, then this would be in that same

First, once again, you are personalizing this. The request was for
aprs.net, not me, and as I've said many times on the sig, anyone that wants
a name in the aprs.net domain need only ask, there are around a hundred
people that have taken advantage of this over the years. aprs.net is a
resource that I believe belongs to the APRS community, a domain over which
I am just the steward. aprs.org is a domain which I registered for Bob's
use, and findU.com, ariss.net, and the others are my domains.
However, as I noted in my email yesterday, I do see some validity in your
point, so I'm asking for "unlimited distribution within APRS", allowing
people to keep their rights outside APRS should they choose to do so.
Finally, and most importantly, most vector maps (in fact all that I have
seen so far, though there must be exceptions) are released into the public
domain, so requiring the GPL on a map actually will INCREASE the
restrictions placed on the use and distribution of those maps.
Again, in my opinion there is no reason that datafiles used with GPL
software need to be under the GPL. If that were the case, no one could use
Apache, Perl, and MySQL on commercial sites!

I'm not claiming it is public domain, but again, I believe the data used by
GPL projects need not follow any particular license. The product of this
project is the code and the database, not the maps themselves.

I agree. I did not say "for unlimited distribution within APRS, and only
within APRS". Authors are free to have even less restrictive terms, and as
I say, all I've seen are in the public domain (though I admit I haven't
been paying that much attention until now).
I'm only asking on the web page for what is needed to allow APRS MM to use
the maps, and not requesting authors to give up any additional rights not
required. I believe that is the right thing to do.

See http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/aprs/errata.html
Which contains notes on many details such as this that are not included in
the APRS spec. See the link to SSID CONVENTIONS
