Is there a comparison between the various APRS programs somewhere? Stuff
like memory needs, CPU speed... I am still struggling with deciding which
OS and APRS program to install on an old notebook.

OK, maybe I misunderstood. My sole point here, was making the project easy
to re-create, should you get hit by a bus. It seems this might do this, as
the maps are the big deal in a mapserver.

Your stuck on this point. I dropped it. I just suggested you drop the
assignment to aprs.net, and instead make the representation of fair use
apply to anyone that wants to use the map.
With your further explanation and revision, I don't see where we are that
far off and best to move on.

Easy: Use Xastir. Add in the GPSMan application so that Xastir knows about
it. You can now download tracks/routes/waypoints and create shapefile maps
from them (real maps).
Copy the map files to the system map area (or symlink back to your user
directory), reindex, and select the map.
Use the Xastir Snapshot feature to create an image of the current view,
which will also create a .geo file to go with it.
You're all done. You now have a map image and a .geo file to go with it.
Using this method you can combine multiple GPS tracks together by selecting
multiple map files, in order to create the resulting snapshot raster image
that you wish to distribute.

There's this:
http://www.eskimo.com/~archer/aprs_capabilities.html
but it doesn't cover minimum RAM/CPU sorts of things. Perhaps a
good thing to add in the future.

I am not sure what you mean by "old" Etrex. I have two two-three year old
Etrexes, one a Vista the other the plain yellow one and I have used both
with my TH-D7s, one an original THD7A converted to "(G)" the other a
THD7A(G) and both work just fine with either Etrex.
Sound like something is wrong either on the Etrex data out or the D7 data
in.

Hi Curt,
The registration fee for APRS+SA has went down to $15.... APRSDos is
Registration free now, I believe Bob? APRSPoint will support any Peet
Bros. Wx Station. Other than that great job on the site.

I had some playing time today and started messing with some of the APRS
programs I have on the computers here. I have confirmed WinAPRS,
APRS+SA, and APRSPoint...

Four APRS-equipped balloon flights are scheduled for this
Saturday and Sunday.
Project: Traveler - Saturday 1400 UTC - Hutchinson KS
http://www.rckara.org/project_traveler/2004a/
NSTAR - Sunday 1500 UTC - Gretna NE http://www.nstar.org
EOSS - Sunday 1500 UTC - Windsor CO http://www.eoss.org
ORB - Sunday 1500 UTC - Collinsville OK
http://www.gbronline.com/harrymue/orb8/
All flights will have one APRS transmitter on 144.34 MHz with
some regional I-gate support on this frequency. Digipeating will
be enabled for some payloads, see
http://www.eoss.org/flight/index.html for more. Flight duration
should be about 1.5-3 hours.
Because the flights are weather-sensitive, there could be some
last-minute cancellations. E-mail me if you have questions.

Is that one used at Dayton for APRS'ers to gather on?
