I have uploaded the update exe for WinAPRS 2.72 to the tawg.org website
at http://www.tawg.org/waprs272update.zip , I have included in this zip
file memory.txt and aprsxtra.txt with all the latest servers added. So
enjoy, the file size is only 983 kb so kinda small before the zip took
place. Normal file size would have been 3.09 mb....

We have just finished tweaking the Tier 2 APRS network for weather data
usage. The following Tier 2 servers have been designated servers for WX/CW,
on the same level:

arizona.aprs2.net (aprswest.net)
socal.aprs2.net
indiana.aprs2.net
newengland.aprs2.net

Each server provides port 23 (input only) and port 2323 (output only) for
all WX data. All servers are inter-linked and share the same exact data.

Currently aprswest.net is seeing over 130,000 unique WX data reports a day.
The Tier 2 WX servers are designed to take the stress off the main Core
APRS servers. 99.9999% of all WX data appears to be the same at each Tier 2
server.

This is important... Each of the servers listed above were considered
backup servers. This no longer is the case. Each are mirrored to perform in
the same exact way and are extremely reliable.

I'd like to thank Brian Hamilton for his WX-Display program. It seems to be
the most preferred program, providing the most connects to the WX servers.
Brian offers a very high level of support for his program. Well done Brian!

Thanks to all the Tier 2 sysops that have trusted my recommendations on the
tweaking of our WX servers. Special thanks to Phil, ad6nh, socal.aprs2.net)
for his coordination efforts at Tier 2 by getting all servers on the same
level.

Thanks to Russ Chadwick and David Helms for the vision that has brought the
CWOP program to where it is today and all those in the trenches that made
it all possible. This teamwork between hams/non-hams stands as a model, as
to how 'xxxx happens' <g>.

Finally, and WOW... Pete Loveall, ae5pl, and Roger Bille, sm5nrk.
Absolutely the most incredible, 'real programmers' I have ever seen.
javAPRSSrvr and javAPRSFilter... fantastic!

The balloon video shown on NASA TV was produced by Michael Gray KD7LMO and
Arizona Near Space Research (ANSR) ( http://www.ansr.org ). They did an
excellent video editing job to put this together.

If you watch closely, you'll see a brief clip of some payload video from an
NSTAR flight.

As many as four balloons may be in the air over the central/southern Plains
at the same time on Saturday the 21st:

Project: Traveler - 1430 UTC - Hutchinson KS
http://www.rckara.org/project_traveler/2004a/
NSTAR - 1500 UTC - 20 mi E of Omaha NE http://www.nstar.org
EOSS - 1500 UTC - Windsor CO http://www.eoss.org
ORB - 1500 UTC - Collinsville OK
http://www.gbronline.com/harrymue/orb8/

All flights will have one APRS transmitter on 144.34 MHz with some regional
I-gate support on this frequency. Flight duration should be about 1.5-3
hours. See the web sites for more details.

I've been in APRS for some time, starting off when APRSDos was the only
choice. Back in those days we followed the proper SSID symbols of the times.
/< MT Motorcycle (SSID = 10)
/> MV CAR (SSID = 9)
/O PO BALLOON (SSID = 11)
/R PR REC. VEHICLE (SSID = 13)
/Y PY YACHT (sail) (SSID = 5)
/' BH Small AIRCRAFT (SSID = 7)

I guess today anything goes.
Times do change, huh?

Gee, is it time for this discussion already? Time flies ;-)

The old mechanism of using the SSID to pick icons is no longer needed, and
therefore you are free to use any SSID for any station.

Anything does indeed go!

Due to "improvement" in the programs .. the SSID is the very *last* way to
identify the icon of a station. Other ways are looked at first (code
sequence in the packet), and if not found then it will default to SSID. This
gives a much greater variety of available station symbols to use.

Now that things have settled down on the server front, I've been able to
spend a little time on Map Manager.

There is now a SourceForge project thanks to Max K6MXD:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/aprsmapserv/

I've released one file so far, the perl code for drawing APRSdos maps. If
someone wants to help, labels still need to added to the code, should not
be hard to do. This will run on any Perl capable computer (are there any
that aren't????), with the GD library and GD.pm interface. I'm sure there
is optimization that could be done, but it runs in a few milliseconds, so
there is little incentive.

I've also got PocketAPRS maps parsing working:

http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/plot.cgi?call=*&geo=http://aprsmm.aprs.net/
pocketgeo.cgi?map=miami.pdb|range=.2|lat=25.75|lon=-80.25

There is A LOT of optimization that needs to be done, the Miami map takes
1.6 seconds to render on the new server. All lines are drawn, no checks
made for out of bounds. Labels are needed here as well. I've got more work
to do before I release it, but if someone gets the labels done on dosmaps,
I'll release it sooner.

If I get a few more days as productive as today, I should have a librarian
interface ready, and then we can start getting maps into the system.
