I would think this will make for a good tool for BeaconNet too!

Subject: Problem with PK-232 and APRS

APRS list,
I am trying to get back into APRS after being off while I focused on
building my AO-40 satellite station, and now am turning back to APRS. I
would like to use my PK-232 as my TNC for my Icom 910H as it has the
highest capabilities with the new DSP Timewave upgrages. Problem is, I
can't get it "see" packets. I am wondering if this is a calibration
problem? Ideas?
My setup:
I have an MFJ TNC dedicated to Dx spots and another TNC (Kantronics 3+)
with radio dedicated to local APRS. I use the MFJ for HF and would like to
use the other port for Satellite Packet and APRS. I tuned these other two
TNC's to 4.39 and they see all APRS packets, the 232 only sees occasation
junk like:
7laM]V-12*>UdJ8-8 <?;6>: 38 7A B0 B8 C7 57 7B 0A
$611A.4810 <?;2>: AF A1 5A 98 AD 70 D9
999599-9>999EVJ-14*>999959-9 <?,P;1>:
$5F3C.0A19 [?,P;1]:
I've got my PK-232 set to MCON level 6, I've tried PTList. The LED bar
moves appropriately when packets come in. I've also got my SQL from the
910 wired to the SQL input, so the relay clicks on everytime the squelch is
broken, but I've tried this both ways.
I'd really appreciate any ideas before I open it up and start recalibrating
the tones.

Subject: RE: New option for HF 30M APRS -- TinyTrak 3b (Review)

I've been thinking about implementing this in the OpenTracker as well. It
doesn't use Mic-E, though... if you want a compact position report, use
OpenTRAC. A basic position report is about as compact as Mic-E, but
provides resolution down to a couple of centimeters and it's easy to encode
and decode. You're right, the short packets get through more reliably than
longer ones, even on VHF. When I've got all the tracker features turned on
in dual-protocol mode, I find the local digipeater will sometimes fail to
pick up the APRS packet, but will rarely if ever pick up the APRS packet
and not the OpenTRAC packet. And the OpenTRAC packet carries more data,
with board temperature, battery voltage, and GPS signal quality.
My biggest obstacle to implementing 300 baud is that I don't have anything
to test it with. I have no HF equipment right now, except for a shortwave
receiver. I'm not sure what the standards are, and I'd need a receiver to
test with - haven't tried AGWPE yet. If someone wants to clue me in with
the technical details I'll see what I can do. It should mostly just be a
matter of changing some timing constants in the FSK code.
Some folks at Cal Poly had some ideas for other firmware functions - a
foxhunt CW keyer, for example. I hope to get a good collection of these
programs together and put them on the OpenTracker website
(http://n1vg.net/opentracker). I may even bundle them into the
configuration program - since it's capable of downloading firmware via the
RS-232 cable, you could have a firmware chooser option to pick the
personality of the device - e.g., VHF tracker, HF tracker, CW keyer, DTMF
encoder. That way you wouldn't even have to keep the separate files
around.
FWIW, otconfig.exe is also a standalone executable that doesn't need to be
installed. It's about 72k right now... if I start adding firmware images
that'd probably add another 8k per image. And connector configuration is
identical to the TT3.

For the last several days, I have been beta-testing the next-generation
firmware for the Byonics TinyTrak 3. The major enhancements in this
next version are support for raw NMEA strings, and support for
300-baud/200-Hz-shift HF operation. Only the contents of the PIC chip
have changed; the new version can be inserted as an upgrade into even
the oldest TinyTrak board. [ I did my testing on an original board
from a TinyTrak I! ]

It does look pretty cool, but my main complaint about the TM1+ is the price
- $110. An assembled TT3 is about half that, or $32 for the kit. Not sure
if Byon's changing that for the 3b. My OpenTracker will probably be around
the same price.
What's the deal with TM1+ firmware upgrades? The website says it's
upgradeable because it's got flash memory, but you need to contact them to
schedule an upgrade. Does it have to be done in the factory?
