Hello all,

I am new to APRS and wanted to ask a few questions if possible.

1. I am building a mobile APRS weather station for Skywarn, and wondered if
there were some good light-weight 'weather packages' than can be
(relatively) easily connected to a mobile APRS configuration WITHOUT the
need for a computer. I have a KPC3+, Garmin 12 GPS and a Kenwood TH-22AT 2m
that I am planning for using in the APRS config.

2. Is 144.39 Mhz a 'nationwide' standard for APRS?

Thanks for any information and/or suggestions.

APRSWorld has been developed on SourceForge for the last two years...

Some of the mapping code may not be in CVS but I suspect James would be
willing to make it available. Some things may have been overlooked when
the code was imported into CVS. The data is another matter as James
explained.

Bill,

I use the Global Label Lists for this purpose and I have several files that
include over a hundred such labels which can be considered Waypoints. I
have all our counties Fire Stations and Landing Zones plotted on my screen.
These items will be present every time I boot up WinAPRS. You can also
layer them so that they will only appear on the screen as you zoom in.
Different zoom levels will show more and more of these points.

This feature works really well in WinAPRS. I will send you one of the files
showing our Fire Stations so you can see how it works.

Glad to see you'll try it. I still think it ought to be easy, right now you
have a program that prints an image to STDOUT, that gets redirected to a
file, and you have shown you have easy access to the corners, the program
now writes out the corner points and URL of the image file to STDOUT.

Perhaps there is something about PHP that makes it harder than it would be
in Perl, I've never worked with PHP.

I am aware of that, but the description on SourceForge:

"APRS World is comprised of an Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS)
parser and a web interface. The parser connects to an APRS feed and inserts
packets into a MySQL database. The web interface provides a convenient
means of retrieving this data."

makes no mention of any mapping capability, in fact this is exactly the
description of findU. There is a single released 16k file now 15 months
old. The mail lists contain no information I can see about the mapping
side, other than how to use it on APRSworld.

>Some of the mapping code may not be in CVS but I suspect James would be

I admit I have not grabbed the CVS, but from everything I've heard Jim say,
this only contains the findU-like capabilities. The map data is not an
issue according to Jim in a prior message, someone setting up a miror
server just needs to get it from the source. There would need to be a step
by step set of instructions and links so someone could set up a mirror
server.

Please understand what I'm looking for...a person or group that takes
responsibility for providing an APRS map server that will meet the world's
needs. Coming up with pieces is much easier than producing and maintaining
a stable system that is reliable. This is a monsterous job, and I'm not
surprised no one is leaping forward...

Jim's stated motivation is experimentation, which is wonderful, but that
makes me a little uneasy on relying on APRSworld for all of APRS's mapping
needs. To succeed, a map server is going to need someone motivated by
providing service. That has always been my motivation behind findU, and I
think that is what has made it as sucessful as it has been. It comes at a
price though, spending an hour or two a day monitoring the servers,
answering email, and other grunt work without any glamour or reward. Not to
mention the angst from an event like this that turns things on their ear,
taking far more time than one has.

So, in sum, what Jim already has is great, and with a little tweaking
should meet the needs of APRS users in the US. From the start, I've not
suggested otherwise. The issue at hand is whether the ideas he and others
talk about for serving the world's APRS needs are going to be developed by
him or others, that will publicly commit to accomplishing the goal.

If so, I could not be more pleased! I don't want to do this, I have no
interest in map drawing. If Jim or someone else is not going to accept
responsibility for providing the service, if these are going to remain
things that might be, or developed in fits and starts on an experimental
basis, then I need to develop my own plans (which still include the
APRSworld maps for the US) so that I can meet the needs of my users outside
the US.

I realize that to some of you this will sound harsh, and no doubt some
self-appointed royalty is going to call me out on this as being unwilling
to play with others, but the fact is a lot of people rely on findU, and I
can't sit back and wait a few months to see what develops...

Steve:

As the "self appointed royality" (that is cute) the only thing I am going
to "call out" is I really wish you would just STOP. You've made your point,
APRSWORLD won't do what you want, I think the whole SIG understands that
now. I think your continued picking it apart paints you in a very
unfavorable light. Better to just move on to what you want, and if that
means not helping out APRSWORLD directly, then so be it.

Just stop.
