Actually, I never said that the APRSworld map server won't do what I need,
I said it doesn't currently do everything I need, I don't know enough about
its internals to say that the things that Jim mentioned will or won't work.
I will say it is not the way I would approach it, but I'm quite willing to
admit that there is more than one way to do things, and that my way is not
always the best way. However, my way is always better than no way, what I
want to know is that there are real plans to follow through on the ideas
presented here.
As to your claim of not supporting APRSworld, I again point out my offer of
the original findU server regardless of what happens in reference to Jim or
any one else taking on the world map challenge (closest thing I could find
on EBay had a $375 price:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3076474116&category=51228
I've stated regardless ofJim ends up doing, APRSworld's maps are an
important part of my plans. I'll do whatever I can to help him.
Aside from trying to make it seem I'm an opponent rather than a supporter
of APRSworld, what have you done to support it????

Subject: Question about placing objects using APRS(Xastir)
From: James Washer <washer@trlp.com>

First, let me say that I live in an area with very little APRS activity.
I'm considering using my fixed APRS station (running Xastir) to place a few
objects. For example, placing objects for a couple of the local repeaters,
with information on PL tones, etc. Also, I thought about automating a
little process to place objects for the local ham club meetings, etc, with
talk-in freqs, for about 24hours leading up to meeting times.
So... is this reasonable or is it grounds for launching surface-to-APRS
missiles?

In fact, Census is only one source of these maps. Others are available
from the USGS, the original source of the maps to Census, and from the
Department of Defense for others (www.nima.gov). Further, a large number
of the 50 states have mapping initiatives where they produce maps that are
often levied into the public domain. For instance, Texas has extensive
mapping and orthoimagery at www.tnris.state.tx.us under 'Digital Data'.
Other countries, for a variety of reasons don't make their mapping efforts
and products as widely available. One potential reason is that the costs
are high enough, especially in countries with fewer resources than the US,
that they partner with commercial interests, utilize the results
internally, and allow the commercial partners to sell the data to recover
costs. Still others restrict accurate maps due to security reasons, real
or imagined.
The use of a Mapserver to produce a raster image of a requested map, with a
.geo or .inf file is a matter of some creative coding in perl or php. Since
Mapserver is open-source, and a very active and vibrant project, it's real
easy to figure out where and how to go with this.
Once again: Getting the accurate data is the hard part. I've tried getting
data for Azerbaijan in the past. I got it, but the restrictions placed on
it made its use a real problem for us in the long run. I don't know if
it's still that restricted now that they're "free" or not.
I'll challenge folks in each country to do a little research on
good-quality maps, *with metadata,* including information on geodetic
datum and map projection used, in the following formats:
ArcInfo/ArcGIS Exchange format (.e00)
ArcView shapefile (.shp) and the associated database files
MapInfo (.tab, .id, .dat, .map)
Autocad (.dxf) *METADATA REQUIRED*
MicroStation Design files (.dgn)
The Open GIS Consortium has a set of interoperability and data sharing
standards. It's not an open-source operation, despite the name, but more a
commercial consortium amongst the various GIS entities that works toward
common standards. Notably, Mapserver complies with all the rational
requirements in their Web Mapping Server standard save one. It won't
intentionally distort a map because the user request was silly. So: any of
the above formats can reasonably be translated using available tools to
work with Mapserver in this context.

wow, sounds like a great project and a heck of an adventure !
http://www.texas4000.org/
(for those who missed this).
You're getting some great advice here - run higher power HF APRS from the
van - no reason to haul a boat anchor on your bike, and don't neglect the
satellite option. I'm assuming the van will be 0 to 20 miles behind the
lead biker at all times, so anyone who knows where the van is will know
where the bikers are.
I'll add: prepare a 'trip tic' of all the voice repeaters on your path,
and have that info in an easy to get at form. If you plan to work
satellites, visit a website such as www.heavens-above.com and get a print
out of all the overflights so you'll know when to listen and transmit.
Additionnally, to build proficiency with the hardware, I'd plan on firing
it up several times a week (include all radio operators in your group) for
a month prior to leaving Texas, just to make sure there are no 'gotchas'.
Finally: you'll get good digi service on 144.39 here in the Colorado 'front
range' area due to our somewhat unique geography here with many mountain
top digipeater and voice repeaters with 100+ mile QRP usable range. (I
ocasionally kerchunk the pikes peak UHF repeater (about 65 miles range for
me) on the 50 mW setting on my D7 HT just because it flips my switch) <and
no, that does not mean that I don't properly complete the transmission with
a station ID within 10 minutes of initial transmission all you regulation
hounds!>

For the satellite tracking I recommend Satscape:

I run this in my car: http://pasadena.net/projects/auto.htm and it
announces the upcoming satellites.

I left this group some time ago because of some silly bickering, I am sorry
to see it has not stopped. Cant we just move forward from all this?
I was hoping to find out the status of any APRS compatible satellites or
projects. That is much more interesting to me.
Any information anyone?
