All this came up just as I was about to release a set of revised symbols
for APRSplus and UI-View. I have now incorporated the wheel chair
symbol (white on blue background) and "Logged On" (monitor similar to
the ones for ATV and SSTV but with ON instead of color bars) into my new
set.

I have some questions about what some of the others should look like.

1) What is Modis Earth Observation and what should it look like? Some
sort of satellite?

2) For /l "Laptop" are you envisioning an actual pic of a laptop ?
("lower case "L" would look just like the number "1" in such a tiny symbol.)

3) Is there some sort of standard FEMA or military symbol for the /c ICP?

3) Ditto for \y "Skywarn"

4) For the /z "Shelter", I have re-used the outline of a house (box
with pitched roof, commonly used for "Hospital" but with the red cross
removed). I have done it with a black outline and white fill that could
be overlaid legibly with a text letter. Any alternate suggestions?

I have filled the positions for all unassigned symbols with a red dot
with black crosshairs so that a usable position indicator WILL appear if
someone accidentally configures their system to transmit a not-yet
assigned symbol.

I have also edited the APRS spec PDF document's symbol table appendix to
reflect the new assignments (not yet released but I am it using for my
own reference... ).

This symbol is intended to represent items of interest on the earths surface
determined through satellite imagery analysis. Initially, this only involves
potential fire sites, but the APRS image should be flexible so to allow
other associations. IOW, not just fires. Also, since this symbol allows
overlay characters, the chosen image should be usable with overlay
characters.

More on MODIS can be found at http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/about/index.html

Thanks.

Yes, something that looks like a laptop...

The skywarn organization has a clearly defined LOGO. It is a black
tornado on a orange background surrounded by a white circle (or at least
that is what my SYMBOL looks like) You can see it in the lower right
corner of http://web.usna.navy.mil/~bruninga/aprs/symbols.html
which shows all my SYMBOLS (though not most of the new ones)...

WHOA. The symobl for a Hospital is supposed to be a BLUE square with a
white "H" in the middle of it. That is the same as the highway sign used
everywhere to indicate hospital.

SHELTER:

I would recommend a red "HOUSE" symbol (a square house with a
pitched roof over it) with room in the center for an overlay) as the
SHELTER icon. Overlay characters are WHITE. If no overlay character
is given then the overlay should default to "+".

I'd prefer that unasigned symbols use the circle with a slash through it
which is the international symbol for "NOT"...

Lat/log will essentially be that of the rooftop antenna, elevation will be
lower than it is in reality. The antenna/preamp/filter combination is
usually worth 20 to 100 feet. The *Distance* to the internal re-raditor is
the other component.

The signals of all satellites will be delayed equally passing through the
re-radiator. Likewise the path from the re-radiator to the GPS receiver is
the same for all. This result is a minor lat/long variation. The major
effect is in altitude.

We have just added another established server to the Tier 2 Network.
Welcome Gerhard, F5VAG from Antony, France (near Paris). His
france.aprs2.net server offers the standard Tier 2 ports, including the
14580 user-defined filter port, as well as many customized European
mainland ports. You can check out http://france.aprs2.net website (a very
well-done website I must say!) for more information. This brings to eight
the number of servers in the Tier 2 Network! Enjoy!

UI-View's currrent set seems to have something resembling this (a blue
square with an H in a lighter blue).

APRSplus uses a rather out of date symbol set that appears to be derived
from the generic set used by Xastir, findu, APRSworld, etc. It shows
All of these show the house outline with a red cross.

Looks like I will have to update the white H on blue in both sets.
