Welcome Adi Linden, VA3ADI, to the Tier 2 network with a new APRS
javAPRSSrvr, APRSONT. You can access the server with the URL
ontario.aprs2.net and it features all of the usual Tier 2 services. In
addition, folks in Canada now have a server-defined Canadian feed on
ontario.aprs2.net:14579. Thanks, Adi!

Hi!
Bob! Just to keep in the back of your mind!

http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/recreation/winter/symbols.shtml

I know you are involved with Boy Scouts and here are some of the symbols
they should probably know....even if it's an overview. In regards to
shelter....we discussed various types and I think we agreed it needed to be
from the alternet symbol set so this it could include an O'ly....because of
the various types of shelters there are. And, there are many! I noticed you
mentioned a specific type of shelter "evacuation" and maybe we should not
get that specific???? Let the O'ly better define what type it is????

Winter Shelter
Evacuation Shelter
Animal Shelter
Human Shelter
Equipment Shelter
Fallout Shelter
Tornado Shelter
Storm Shelter
Biohazard Shelter
Homeless Shelter (Red Circle with O'ly in New York)
Etc.

The one problem we had with shelter in California were the various types
that were popping up. I had 5 or 6 shelters in the high desert, one or two
being animal shelters (VERY Important now-a-days) and no symbol at the
time. I think I just used a No. Cir with O'lys after discussing it with
you....but I do not remember actually picking a specific symbol for
it...must have been before breakfast!

Map Symbols and symbology can be somewhat interesting....and you can learn
looking these things up!

A lot of good points have been brought up about things like shelter
capabilities and how the APRS symbols really don't convey enough
information. That's exactly the sort of thing OpenTRAC is trying to
address. To the APRS community in general, I say if you've got ideas on
what kind of information should be supported, at least send me a quick email
at scott@opentrac.org. If you're deeply involved with some aspect (e.g.
shelter operations) and you're got ideas on specifics and want to be
involved with the design process, consider joining the mailing list.

Mailing list volume is pretty low right now. At the moment we've got a
couple of software development projects going (the ActiveX decoder, for
example) that'll help us get a basic level of support going. That'll help
us verify that the basic concepts work before we devote huge amounts of time
to more specialized features.

The default digi_ned.ini supplied with the digi_ned sources, is it
suitable for a generic digipeater that has 2 ports, one RF and the other
to an igate? Just wondering which lines I should be changing.

I am hoping not to have to understand every detail of the config right now
but to get it up and running quickly and tweak later.

Adi
