Some of the position reports on findu show a 'Status:' line. How is that
information determined?

Example: <http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=VA3SLT> shows like
this:

Status: DIGI_NED: digipeater VA3SLT in Sioux Lookout
Raw packet: VA3SLT>APND0X,WIDE,WIDE3-3,qAR,VA3SLT:!5005.96ND09155.53W# VA3SLT
digi_ned/aprsd Linux - va3slt@adis.ca

Just wondering since the status line seems to show different information
depending on the symbols used. At least that's what it looks like to me.

Adi

Yes, we need an artist to make them. Here are my suggestions:

>> /) = Wheelchair (blue handicapped symbol)
>> \) = Firenet MEO symbol (WA6OFT will tell us)
>> /L = Logged-ON user. A PC symbol showing someone on APRS-IS
>> /l = Laptop (lower case L)
>> /c = Incident Command Post (WA6OFT will tell us)
>> \y = Skywarn A black tornado on an orange background
            inside a white circle
>> /z = Shelter (A symbol that will accept overlays readily TBD)
                    (WA6OFT will recommend)

Notice that I defer some of these to WA6OFT who has defined them for
FIRENET and has even told me, but I'd have to go back and dig it all up.
Only the Shelter one is yet to be determined...

But for those programs that simply use ICONS for SYMBOLS, someone has to
draw them and make them available to others I guess...

The stations that send an APRS status packet are the ones that have it
appear on findU. The status packet is one beginning with >.

The STATUS is an entry line in your APRS program. You enter what you want
and how often you want it to transmit. The Kenwood APRS radios have preset
STATUS Texts such as In Service, Enroute etc. You can't enter your own
comments. In the APRS programs you can. It has nothing to do with the
station symbols. I think that's the information you're looking for. Dave

Bob and Group,

I would like to see the shelter symbol follow the United Nations Military
Symbol Set....but it does not use O'ly's we could employ.
Ref:
http://www.un.org/Depts/dpko/training/training_material/cdrom/peacekeeping_train
nig/dpko_symbols.pdf
so my second suggestion would be a RED CIRCLE with O'ly (and hopefully in
the future add the capability of a 2 letter or number O'ly).

As a sub note...I would really like to see what the newer Field Electronic
Warfare Ops Centers (EWOC) use for some of their near real-time sensor
symbols!

UI-View's symbol set has the correct [/soapbox on] PICTORIAL SYMBOLS (not
ICONS) ( pictorial symbols ref:
http://www.gis.unbc.ca/courses/geog205/labs/lab4/bottomframe.html ) and
http://www.nusd.k12.ca.us/Nusd/histss-first.html [/soapbox off]
representing the ones in the list which were posted earlier with exception
to the wheel chair....I think! Xastir should also have the correct symbols
but I am not sure on that. The FireNet symbols were voted on by the entire
Firenet team at that time and we have a great mix of APRS users on the APRS
team. If you want to see the entire set that UI-View uses they are
available.

Something to also think about...and this is a productive healthy growing
pain, IMHO.

1. Pictorial symbols do need to become smaller just because of the shear
number of possibilites out there.
APRS is growing and FireNet would be a good example of data possiblities
in the regular IS in the future.
The APRS spec really only addresses a very small portion and there needs
to be room for this to grow.
The end result will be that everything on this earth can have a
pictorial map symbol or what ever other type of a symbol representing the
same thing. Just one example is the Shelter symbol. There are a dozen
different types of shelters.

2. I feel like the symbols need to be better defined.
It will become more important to define the symbols in the spec with
better detail. Some symbols can simply be defined with a one line sentence
where others 'should' be more clearly defined. An example for RADIATION:
http://www.wa6oft.com/example/example1.htm .

While everyone is looking at symbols, Dale has VOLCANO activity from time to
time. It would be better, IMHO that the symbol that represents
this is more than just SMOKE, etc. I can't remember what he uses now but
Volcano activity might be an important feature too!

Programmers have their work cut out for them if this is ever going to
expand, I am sure! These are just my thoughts.

That's not what I mean. If I send this raw packet to the aprs-is:
VA3SLT>APND0X,WIDE,WIDE3-3,qAR,VA3SLT:!5005.96ND09155.53W# VA3SLT
digi_ned/aprsd Linux - va3slt@adis.ca

How does findu get this out ouf it:
Status: DIGI_NED: digipeater VA3SLT in Sioux Lookout

There's got to be some parsing and interpreting of the comment string
going on.

I need to isolate the computer from the APRS radio. I can either put
transformers and optocouplers between radio and tnc or optocouplers on the
serial interface.

I remember something about KISS not requiring any control signals on the
serial port between TNC and computer. Is that correct? It is easiest for
me to power the TNC from the radio and isolate the computer interface.
Especially if I anly need to isolate RxD and TxD on the serial port an not
connect anything else.

Thanks,
Adi
