I've noticed that if I set xastir to send compressed posits that my wx data
no longer registers on FindU. The position gets updated, but the weather
data apparently does not. I'm not sure if the problem lies in xastir or
FindU. I've switched back to normal packets (nothing compressed).

Here's an example packet that decodes the posit but not the wx:

KB0KQA>APX121,K0NDX-10*,qAo,W0TVD-10:=/6d9G70,R_{9C099/000g000t-22r000P000p0

I could use two symbols for weather- excessive heat and excessive cold.
These two weather events killed more people last year than all other
weather related deaths combined. I am having to use a "wind" symbol for
"wind chill" warning- not exactly right. Maybe a red themometer and a
blue themometer ?

Good ideas. But since this is an "area" type thing, dont you draw "zones"
that would better represent it. Or when you draw zones, do you somehow
send a separate SYMBOL to represent it? Or are you sqying that these HOT
and COLD Symbols would replace the WEATHER station symbol from a station
that is experinencig it?

Subject: New findU server coming!
From: Steve Dimse <k4hg@tapr.org>

Yesterday I took delivery of what will soon become the fourth server to
host findU. The current hardware was purchased nearly two years ago (which
is about 60 in server years ;-).

The new machine is a Dell 2650, dual Xeon at 2.8 GB, 3 GB 533 MHz RAM, dual
73 GB 15k RPM drives on a split backplane (each drive has its own SCSI
bus). This machine is simply amazing, it should serve findU's needs for the
next couple years, and I bet you will notice the difference when it goes
online. It also is rackmount, which will make life easier for the co-lo
site, when I bought the last one I had no idea it would end up in a server
farm so I ordered it as a tower.

Three of the 10K drives from the old server will be transferred to the new
machine for backup storage, and to make transferring the database easier.

Of course, nothing good is without pain, a swap like this means angst. Once
I get software installed on the machine and ship it to the co-location
site, I will switch the domain www.findu.com to point at the backup machine
in Texas. I've just synced the primary and backup machines, and to the best
of my knowledge, everything is working correctly on the backup, however I
want people to test it.

Try all your favorite pages on the backup to be sure all is right, by
replacing www with www2, so:

http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/wxpage.cgi?call=K4HG&last=48

becomes

http://www2.findu.com/cgi-bin/wxpage.cgi?call=K4HG&last=48

If you find anything broken, please let me know ASAP, as my attention now
is focused on getting the new machine ready and I'm not watching either
server closely. Anyone using email to send position reports should be
warned there are likely to be problems, as there is not a mail server
running on the backup machine. I'm hoping this will be minimal, as I'm
using starting the server with a different IP at first to allow them to run
side-by-side. I've never managed a swap without interrupting email, so be
forewarned. I'll be using this opportunity to move up to Apache 2 and MySQL
4, further complicating the move.

Further warning will be posted here before the swap is made, stay tuned for
more details, and thanks for your patience.

www.jfindu.net and www.aprs-is.net have been given a new home at on a
server at a collocation site. The move happened over the last 2 days
and jFindu's data is missing about 36 hours (Wednesday afternoon through
earlier this morning, CST). Availability should be extremely high now
and response times should be significantly improved.

Have fun.

We added the shelter after the fires in California I think... But I cant
remember what the symbol was actually supposed to look like....?
SOmething like a RED cross I would imagine, but it should look difference
from the "RED CROSS" symbol. Maybe a green cross?

Reading this - I was reminded of two things... first, the green cross
means two different things in other parts of the world... and we do keep
forgetting the rest of the world quite often (green cross means pharmacy
in some places... and first aid in other places)... so the meaning of
green cross could be misinterpreted...

Second... there is the old Military saying (poorly quoted)

"Tactics" is for dilettantes
"Strategy" is for wannabes
LOGISTICS is for Professionals

or to badly quote a US Civil War General... he who get thar fustest -
with tha mostest - wins

Recall, that "Logistics" - from a Military perspective - is a three
legged stool: Supply, Transport, Maintenance.

SO... great... there is a shelter there... but is it full? how many
cots available? what's the food/water situation there?

Where are the blankets stored? Food/rations? how much? where is the
potable water? where is the water station that has water for
fire/decontam use? where is the fuel depot? what kind of fuel is there
(mogas, diesel, bunker, avgas???)- where are the generators, the chain
saws (ice storms and hurricanes push the need for chainsaws... and I
think forrest fires as well)... where are the bulldozers (fire lines...
as well as road repair)... where is the icon showing FM repeater (with
freq and tone - and does it have phone patch)... most folks here could
add to these comments for hours I'm sure....

OK... there's a red cross.. but is it a full up hospital, a critical
care facility? a triage station ? where is the helipad for medivac
helo's?

The geographically oriented nature of UI Frame position information has
so much potential for emergencies and disasters - but the limited scope
of the information presented - limits the utility from what it could be.

I wish I had a simple answer - it's easy to point out shortcomings...
but I'd say Scott Millers multilevel symbology might be a place to start
looking...
