I did. Switched to UIView, listed stations calls in Exclude List and they
are gone.

There ya go! Now wasn't that easy? And probably cost you a fifth of what
WinAPRS did and does so much more and is still supported! :)

Yes, but you cannot turn that on in APRS mode from the front panel. But
you can turn it on with an attached PC and then it will stay on, (I
think)...

But making a digi out of it is a waste of a good radio, but useful if you
need a quick fix...

If you are fast and give HAM radio top priority, yes. When I move then my
station will be off-line for quite some time, at least a day. That's enough
to get purged from the station history in normal cases...

I think this example is academic.

Kind regards,

Henk.

Hello Bob,

Yeah, normally you start without knowledge. The movement is only kept
runtime, if you shut down or the station vanishes due to inactivity, this
"knowledge" is lost too. But you say that in an emergency the mobiles stay
in one place awaiting orders, but these are never given since the Xastir
user doesn't see mobiles at that time? I don't buy that. I expect these
cars to drive arround and then they will be visible as mobile. I don't buy
that the cars stay at their initial position in case of emergency.

To be frank, I haven't looked at the wording used in Xastir, I think the
flag says "has moved" so many the filter is called like that too, instead
of "mobile". But I know Curt is very active in the tactical-emergency area,
I'm pritty sure that he would have blocked this option if it didn't have
value in real emergency sitiation. I know that Xastir is the only program
that let me see real moving stations where all other implementation "leak"
stations that should not have been there. Maybe sloppy use of icons by the
users, but still a fact.

The nice thing of this method is, that new icons/symbols do not require a
code change. If you intoduce a "new" like the wheelchair, the code works
out of the box with this new symbol file.

And what if you want a new mobile symbol? Then all authors should get to
work to release a new version of their program?

Besides that, this automated mechanism is more ensurance that every program
displays the same stations as mobile as dependency on symbols. Also symbols
is not enoug, what about the dummy GPS trackers. They convey information
about their appearence a completely different way.

Maybe we should drop "mobile" althogether and go for "moved" since it is
much more robust and and future proof. The code-space you save can be put
to use for other nice features.

Kind regards,

Henk.

Lesson learned: At Marine Corps Marathon (20,000 runners) we put my
trackers on lead, tail, and 2 or 3 VIP vehicles. Marine Corps was so
impressed, all the visitnng generals came to our tent to get the tactical
picture instead of the Marine Crops Headquarters tent (which was still
using hoot-n-holler crank-up field phones!

So NEXT year we got 11 trackers ready and were told to put them ALL on the
ambulances. The ambulances all pool at the Pentagon Parking lot.

Guess what. The LEAD runner crossed the finish line before even the FIRST
almulance was ever dispatched. The track history for that marathon shows
the first 3 hours with NOTHING moving, and 11 ambulances sitting in the
Pentagon parking lot.

We are never going to do that again. Yes, the ambulances eventually start
moving AFTER a few hours after the lead runners are finished as all the
old slow runners start keeling over, but by then, all the media is gone,
the VIPs are gone, and the AMBULANCES dont need us at all, because they
all know where they are dispatched to and they all know where the
hospitals are. ANd most of them did not want the thing duck-taped to
their spit-n-polish ambulance in the first place...

Yep, thus this is a non issue. I am perfectly happy with it being called
"MOVED". But this whole discussion started when soemone told me it said
"MOBILE" which is what I object to as a conflict of existing terms already
in use in APRS...

>Maybe we should drop "mobile" althogether and go for "moved" since it is

MOVED is an acceptible category, and has its uses.
But MOBILE is another category of all assets that are capable of moving
and is more valuable to an operations scenario. Besides all stations
that are moving (on an APRSdos or any other screen that properly displays
a CSE/SPD vector and Dead_Reckon vector symbology are so visibile that a
separate selection of "moving" is redundant...

Any dumb tracker with a TNC can also display OBJECTS on an attached GPS:

This is a re-post from a year ago:

If you use a DUMB tracker with a GPS that has MAP displays, remember that
someone can send you OBJECTS that will display on your GPS map just like
the D7 does. This is useful for SAR or other organized events where you
may be using DUMB trackers, but need to send OBJECTS to those drivers on
their GPS maps.

To do it, all you have to do is send a NMEA WAYPOINT packet and the dumb
tracker will pass the WAYPOINT to the GPS which will display it. Not many
people use this much, but its a neat feature if you have a dumb tracker
and a need.

In APRSdos, just flag any object you are uplinking with a "W" to convert
it to WAYPOINT on the air for all dumb trackers to see. Also, at special
events, APRSdos can be set to convert EVERY PACKET HEARD to a waypoihnt
and retransmit it. This would kill a normal 144.39 event, but if you have
lots of dumb trackers that need to see what is going on and are on a quiet
frequency, it will work fine.
