Subject: APRS Speech

On Sat, 24 Jan 2004, Scott Miller identified a TINY text-to-speech board
that is perfect for the APRS-to-Speech idea we had for our satellite.
And since APRS has always had a definition for TEXT-TO-SPEECH (I think
WinAPRS and APRS+SA both speak it, and APRSdos sounds out such text in CW)
this might make it easier for our Kenwoods and HamHUDS and other NON PC
applications SPEAK APRS...
The current definition of SPEECH in APRS is any word preceeded by a % in a
message. The Kenwood D700 will speak such messages if it has the Voice
Synthesizer module. But it only speaks words it recognizes. Otherwise it
spells them...
But with this tiny board that Scott identified, ANY TNC can speak. BUT
of course, we will need a front-end APRS specific PIC in front of it so
that only those packets we want spoken will be spoken. And for the D700,
the PIC would have to handshake with the existing serial port to turn on
serial port monitoring while it is in APRS mode, so that it can see the
sentences it needs to speak.
If this catches on, we may need to enhance the speech portion of the APRS
protocol to standardize on the expected results. As implemented in the
Kenwood, for example, it only speaks messages addressed just to you. It
will not speak bulletins for example... But even this is easily controlled
by how you set up our Message groups.
Just somthing for those PIC experts to work on...

Bob,
Did I miss Scott's message identifying the Text-to-Speech board?
If so, could you let me know what and where..
Thanks

USB devices are allowed up to 0.5A at 5V.
Now the bad news.
The USB device tells the controller how much it draws, so if you pirate out
significantly more, the hub may shut you down.
