People

You might not see UI-View on the TAPR www site, but it is there... TAPR
offer Roger space on it's server for UI-View downloads. You can see the
files directly by looking at

Is N5QIA on this list? Or, alternatively, does anybody know how to contact
that person? The email given in weather packets from this station does not
work.

I'm getting MANY packets from this station...maybe 60 an hour or more.

Thanks,
Earl

I was informed that your packet shown is a grid square and I was speaking of
the compressed packet problem. Sorry, but take a look below...anyway.

In the PcSat webpages and the instructions that everyone reads (right?),
Bob suggests that all stations use compressed beacons to keep the packets
short.

If you refer to http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=wa6oft-10 , you
will see a compressed packet from WA6OFT-10, which displays fine on many
client software.
Now, referring to http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/near.cgi?call=WA6OFT-10 , you
will see all the nearby stations around WA6OFT-10. You will also see many
of them with map SYMBOLS next to their callsigns indicating what they appear
as on your map. An example of this is WA6OFT-2 and the raw packet looks
like:

Raw packet:
WA6OFT-2>APT310,WIDE,SAR,qAr,WA6OFT-1:/222807h3408.90N/11417.31Wk000/000/A=0
00498/Commtrak TrakPak

which is not compressed. And, for WA6OFT-2, you see it has a map SYMBOL of
truck.

Now, if you look at the raw packet of WA6OFT-10, which is a compressed
packet for SatGate operations:

Raw packet: WA6OFT-10>APU25H,TCPIP*,qAS,WA6OFT-15:=S=6E<1X;q& Bhowdy

and then look at what map SYMBOL appears next to it, you'll find it does not
have a map symbol on findu. yet it displays fine on client software.

What is interesting is that findu displays the position correctly, telling
me it is processing the compressed packet. It's just not displaying the map
SYMBOL correctly from what it processed. And, you see this on many
stations. Both UI-View and Xastir decode this correctly. So if you are
using a grid square location and your findu position is correct on the map,
then it must have some sort of issue with that as well.

Does anyone know the origin of the tri color icon displayed showing the USA
on some of the find u pages?

http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/near.cgi?call=WA6OFT-10

The link above shows a list of stations heard around WA6OFT-10. In the
list, some stations show an icon I've never seen before. How can you
program it?

We have room for a match box sized text-to-speech gizmo or any other small
rs-232 payload on our next satellite.

The satellite has a PCsat clone digipeater (KPC-3 TNC) and besides
digipeating, the serial port is unused (in fact, 2 of them) They are
available for secondary mission payloads (but only match box size). Our
first thought is the text-to-speech box, and with the right packet, it
could SPEAK the contents of a special APRS packet.

No loggon required. Just send the packet and it would speak. What would
really be neat is if it had two voices. Then two people could QSO just by
choosing one or the other voice and typing their half of the QSO.
Mutt-and-Jeff..

I cannot promise anything, but you build it and I see no reason why we cant
fly it. And after this bird, we have more funded RS-232 opportunities in
the pipeline. For this one, I think maybe we have 3 months before we might
need a prototype. Ill know more in a week.

If you have any other rs-232 experiment that meets the matchbox criteria we
will be happy to consider them as well. An ionozation detector would be
great too. A small gyro? whatever...

Just something to think about

This icon appears on posits sent via WinLink, I think it is an icon from
APRS+SA, Brent gave me the icon set I use, I suspect it is using a code
that is otherwise unaccessible. One of these days I will replace it with a
WinLink icon...

Humh... as my daughter approaches dirving age (and has APRS inthe car) I
wonder if some PIC processor person wanted to make an OBD device to send
Engine conditions to the unused serial port on my D700 to alert me to
engine problems while she is driving.

PIC would read OBD, decide on severity, toggle the D700 from APRS to
PACKET mode. Send the packet, then toggle back to APRS mode and
continue as usual...

My experience in Europe is that detection of mobility based on symbols
doesn't work very well. What works very well is the way Xastir uses: if it
moves it is mobile! This also keeps "static" mobiles out of sight and is
compatible with any future symbol for mobiles. I wished PocketAPRS
implemented this the same way.

Anyway, if it moves it must be mobile, this looks rather fail-safe to me.
The only problems I see are:

1) When somebody is sending slightly different positions (for example
base-91 compressed posits combined with an occasional plain posit for those
clients that do not understand compressed posits).

2) Wandering GPS data which moves arround a fixed point.

Both can be solved by allowing a small margin (e.g. 100 meters should be
rather safe) arround a posit.

I think this also saves a lot of logic in the code, you keep a history for
stations anyway so comparing an setting a flag is simple. Once set you
never have to reset the flag unless the icon changes (just in case a fixed
station runs with the same call and SSID). If you want to see HF and I
gates too you have to add these explicitly.

Kind regards,

Henk.
