Yes I can see how it would effect others. Living in area where the VHF
APRS system is isolated to a large extent that did not occur to me.

Has anyone had experience with either of these USB/RS232 converters?
Newegg.com has them for what appears to be a pretty reasonable price.
Do they work ok with GPS's and APRS programs?

BYTECC USB / SERIAL Adapter $xx.xx

I use The IoGear Ones 2 at a time under windows XP and they work fine. There
is one bug with these under WinXP. You have to release serial port before
ending program or it will reset the computer. No problems when connected to
my D700. I use them for my gps and another issue that arises is that if you
have the gps plugged in when inserting it Windows seems to think it is a
serial mouse and jumps the cursor all over the screen.
I got around this by letting it load the driver disconnecting the gps to
regain control of the cursor then disabling the serial mouse driver in
device manager.I hope this helps sorry it is general info not specific for
the ones you listed.

Hi all,
I am not addressing the cable adapters since there are many different
brands available and perhaps each has it's own following. I would like to
address the problem encountered when using these adapters with either
version of XP.
XP's PnP function recognizes the "signal" of an active GPS on boot up as a
"Microsoft Serial Ballpoint" and consequently loads the driver for a this
mouse. To fix this problem follow the following steps.
1. With the GPS connected and running boot up the computer
2.After the PC is up and running regain control of the mouse pointer by
turning OFF the GPS.
3. Select START>CONTROLPANEL>SYSTEM>HARDWARE TAB>DEVICE MANAGER BUTTON
4. Find the "Mice and other Pointing Devices" index and left click expanding
the file
5. Find the entry for "Microsoft Serial Ballpoint", RIGHT click then select
"PROPERTIES".
6. At the bottom of the Properties window there is a drop down list. CLICK
the arrow to open the list and select "Do Not Use This Device (DISABLE)".
7. Click OK to close the window.
8. Restart your computer to immediately to save these changes
I don't know if it is a good idea to locate the Serial Mouse Driver driver
and delete it. It's possible it could cause a problem or perhaps you may
want to install a serial mouse sometime in the future.
Good Luck

Wheelchairs in APRS:
We have discovered an error in the APRSspec regarding the Wheelchair ICON.
Versions prior to the SPEC had a Wheelchair for a certain ICON, but the
spec didnt (so newer codes dont have it).
But since the Wheelchair is used frequently in Marathons for the LEAD
HAndicapped, some of you may have important log files that used the
Wheelchair ICON.
We have to decide to change the spec, or have everyone have to change
their old log files. If you havent ever used the Wheelchair ICON, do not
respond. If you have used it and it is important to you in your existing
log files let us know so we can evaulate the best way to fix this.
If noone but me used it, then the easy fix is to leave the spec alone and
create a NEW wheelchair ICON in a different place... But if lots of us
then have to go back and edit all our old log files to change the ICON,
then that has to be considered.

As I suspected:
There are obviously querks to EVERY type of Operating System and the use of
it's required driver for a USB-Serial.
The ONE problem I encountered with the Mac OS is that (at least with my
iMac; DV, OS 9) is that IF you boot up the computer with the adaptor
already plugged IN to the USB port, the computer will NOT boot up...you
will get a nice bright screen, with nothing but a blank picture on it.
You HAVE to boot the computer WITHOUT the USB wire plugged in, and after
it's finished, THEN plug in the wire.
Aside from this, I have never encountered ANY problem with mine (Belkin
F5U103-Mac).
Oh, by the way ANYTHING Belkin has a LIFETIME warranty.

For information :
Our group (in the UK) has used a wheelchair ICON for a long time.
The one we have used is:
Alternate Table : OJ, 8, W-Chair
Changing to another symbol however would not be a particular problem for us.

Hello group,
Here is what I finally got from Kantronics on the updates for the KPC3+.
73, Shanon KA8SPW
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
After 8.3, these are the changes:
1. multi-user mailbox access.
more than one connection to the mailbox, as set by the PBUSERS command (up
to 10 connections at once).
2. K-Net included (not a separate update anymore)
3. support for the current MX version of the KPC-3 Plus. A small circuit
design change was required, because the previous modem chip used is being
obsoleted by its manufacturer. The new design uses an MX-604 modem chip
(one for standard half-duplex, an optional second one is required for
full-duplex capability)
All other operation of the KPC-3 Plus, and other circuits remain the same
as before.
I have no further information about old model updates at this time. They
were supplied only in replacement proms, and were not available in any
other form.
Ken,
Technical Service

Todd,
My understanding from what I have seen is that V9.0 is nearly exactly
the same as the config for 8.3 on the webpage. Here is what I would do,
put in the commands make sure none of the error. Then if you want
privately email me a copy of the disp command. Type disp and then in
hyperterminal or other term copy and paste the commands and responses to
an email. I will review everything for you and make sure all appears
well. This is not required, but I offer it to anyone who wants me to
review TNC configs.
We are watching from Grand Rapids for yah!
