Phil,

Igates that are that close together should possibly exclude each other's
callsign/ssid from gating Inet to RF.
Is there any reason the other igate needs to gate traffic from the IS to RF
for your Igate station? If not, then ask him to exclude you.
You have that capability in UI-View by editing your igate.ini file, don't
know about the others.
That should pretty much resolve the problem.

This is a great idea, and should be done now as a temporary fix. In fact,
those stations could also be added to the SUPL and LLIST on Kantronics TNCs
(and others that support it). This would prevent the IGates from hearing
each other. This should not effect emergency communications, unless the
IGate is also functioning as a digi, which is not recommended anyway. I am
going to try to effect these changes locally to see what happens. Thanks
for the ideas!

PCsat is now in negative power budget and practically unuseable.

We will try for a few more days to turn everything off (INCLUDING THE
DIGI) to try to get it through eclipses. When the digi is off, the only
packet you will see is the 1/min telemety packet and it will be from the
callsign of NODIGI...

Sorry, it was a good run. We got 33 days out of it this time....

We restored PCsat to full operations 15 Dec, 2 days before full sun and
she supported users to over 50 a day around the world through the end of
the year.

She entered eclipses again on 1 Jan, yet continued to support even growing
numbers of users. During this same time, the ISS packet system became
operational again, further attracting users to this mode. Often, PCsat
logged 60+ users (the size of our WEB log) in just over 12 hours.

But over MLK weekend we lost her back to negative power again. Last pass
Friday, 16th all telemetry looked good and I restored the 72 hour timer
and we were all set for the weekend. But with seconds before LOS, I
noticed that although the telemetry was showing, and I had commanded the
TX's to isolate, they weren't. The relay was stuck. And it was our last
pass for the next 16 hours.

ALl weekend our 3 stations around the world tried to re-energize ths stuck
relay, and I came in on Saturday and was sure I was successful, but again,
on each eclipse we lost it again. So Tues and Wed, we also were able to
fully command it, but the eclipses are just too long and she dies on the
dark side.

So PCsat goes back into catch-as-catch can mode until next full Sun in
MAY... Our longest period without a full sun period since launch.

After a few more days of attempts at recovery, we will not bother to turn
off the DIGI and revert back to the mode of "if you can hear it, work
it..." And that will only be in the SUN...

I have been out of APRS for a while so dont know whats new or passe'.

Is UIVIEW being used by many people in the US ? I used it for a bit about a
year ago and was impressed with it, but dont even see it listed on the TAPR
site anywhere.

Is APRS dieing a slow death or is it on the rise? I have followed many dead
links or links that havent been update in several years.

Phil,
UI-View32 V1.99 just hit the streets the end of last week. It blows away
EVERY other piece of software that I have used. On my map, I see a lot of
UI-View users out there. Goto www.uiview.com and download the software.
There is also a UIView group on Yahoo Groups for support so if you need any
assistance just send a message to that group and Roger, the owner, will be
happy to answer your questions.

I assure you APRS is not dying. The number of downloads for Xastir has
been on an upward trend for the last two years. We're almost at 9000
recorded downloads now since we moved the repository to a site that reports
it. Here's a chart that shows most of the current APRS client software:

    http://www.eskimo.com/~archer/aprs_capabilities.html

Links at the bottom of the chart will take you to the main site for each.

I will also assure you that reports of APRS death is greatly exagerated.

For example: On the 20th of December I started making hourly dumps of every
current stations last position
(http://archive.aprsworld.net/position/hourly/). A month ago, 22 December
that dump for 1600 UTC was 208 kilobytes. Today the same dump is 216
kilobytes. Now the size really doesn't mean anything at all. The useful
information is that the trend is it getting bigger which implies more
stations are on the air.

Let me add my stats...

findU use is increasing at a scary pace, for each of the last 4 months, the
hit totals jumped by more than 500,000. Last month there were 6,256,910
hits from 4,730,414 page-views, already this month the count is over 5M
hits, on pace to break 7M, doesn't sound like APRS is on death's door.

One more stat, since a problem with the UPS at the colocation site forced a
reboot, the server has been up for 215 days. Given the load on the server,
that is an incredible testament to Linux, Apache, and mySQL. Speaking of
the colo site, an enthusiastic thank you to John N2PQV for donating space,
not many people would put up with findU's load!

With UI-View this would not be necessary....but yes that could be done.

The Emergency deal should not be an issue. A quick change of the SSID
should resolve any "friendly" blocking of igates. Not only that, an igate
should NOT change because of an emergency. It's the WORST time to start
making changes to a known local network. Of course, there are always
exceptions to this.

What does the N6 station run as software???? If it's UI-View....piece of
cake!
