I'm fairly excited about the potenial of a combined FT-817 and small
PC such as a Libretto. Should do everything from Pactor (winlink)
and QPSK15 on HF to 9k6 data at UHF.
A couple questions remain:
First, a few queries to both the QRP and FT-817 lists did not yield high
confidence that the FT-817 is really good for 9k6 packet data. It
works for the low throughput operation but nobody was able to confirm
it works with a low BER for large packets.
Second, Pactor -- as the minimal requirement for Winlink -- is not common
with the soundcard modem implementations.

PSK31 is good for keyboarding. It's far too slow for real data
operation. Clover, Pactor 2 and 3, and QPSK15 on HF put the 1200
baud AFSK we use in VHF to shame...

As mentioned already, http:/www.winlink.org does just that. The
challenge is doing it backpacking instead of with the resources of a RF
or boat.

You might want to take a look at:

p.s. I might suggest Garmin's proprietary $GPRMZ sentence as one to
parse. It's short and gives elevation in feet.
