Once again, I want to make my plug for the findU version of this page. I
need to update the page take advantage of the new features I've added to
the dmap cgi, and will be doing so soon.

This page has features my javAPRS version cannot match. findU knows the
waypoints for the course, calculates each tracker's current leg, and its
position within the leg, and displays it in a table. The map portion of the
page uses the same maps as the javAPRS page, but has the advantage of not
needing to be connected full time to the internet, you get the full
tactical picture as soon as the page loads.

If there is something that will make this more useful to people, please let
me know.

Also, hopefully the powers that be will let me know of the tracker
assignments and any waypoint changes as soon as they become available...

I run a mobile Igate in my car using a SprintVision phone connected to my
laptop with a USB cable. I'm able to gate PCsat traffic back to the IS
using this method. The connection speed is like that of a fast dial up
connection.

It appears that Pahrump and Barstow have Sprint coverage based on the
information from http://www.sprintpcs.com

The phone model that I have has an external antenna connector. A yagi or
other 1900 MHz antenna should increase it's range. Verizon and other
carriers have a similar capability. Some plans have no charge for data
usage.

Are there any Amateur Radio operators, with dial up or broadband, in these
local communities that would allow you to put a temporary Igate in their
home?

Frank,
On a side note, could you tell me how to find which cell phone companies
have cell phones that one can use a Yagi? My mother is in San Felipe, Baja
CA, MX at this time. She has one service that allows her to use a Yagi up
the Sea of Cortez for cell service (typically good for skip during dusk and
dawn hours). She'd like to change services, but I do not know how to find
out if she can still use the same trick, with the same phone (currenly old
phone).

She'd like to get another line that would be more portable when she is up
in the states.

As you know each phone is different. The carriers normally don't know this
information.

Check on the various manufacturers web sites for the phone in
question. Some have connectors some don't.

Also, I bought the data cable for one of my cellphones. It came with a
driver disk that basically turns the cellphone into a 9600 baud radiomodem.
works great when you are out in the field and there is no other way to
connect to the IS.
I've used it with UI-View and a filtered port and it was fine!

I mentioned Sprint Vision in my last email, because an "undocumented
feature" in their plans allows "unlimited" 3g (really 2.5g) data use at no
additional charge, IF you use the data through a USB cable on one of the
phones. This will work on even the low cost Vision plans. Normally it's
around $xxx/mo for a PCMCIA card for unlimited data. A vendor on eBay
sells cables that charge the phone through the USB cable.

At one time I was a Cingular (GSM) customer. I also had the data cable for
the 9600 bps service. However the data service at the time required that I
"dial" an ISP through the cell phone in order to connect to the internet.
This service was charged on a per-minute rate and not included in my pool
of minutes.

This differs greatly with the newer Sprint Vision (CDMA 3g) and GPRS data
services. These newer services are IP based and don't require an
additional ISP for dial up. These newer services have speeds that average
50-90kbps
