I know there was a question on this, but I never saw a response. I
would like to also create a PM for Saphire on my d700. Can someone send
how they have the two channels setup for Sapphire? I would really be
interested in helping. Also, I can easily put a Satgate up here on the
UHF downlink, I just need to have an antenna designed. I have the
KPC9612 9600 baud port available and a 9600 baud packet radio ready with
cable. Can someone send an easy antenna design and I will get it made
up and installed this weekend.
Thanks,
Mike

In UI-view I use path: APRS,KE6QMD,SGATE,WIDE
Easy from the menu in the remote head of the D700:
menu>radio>tnc
Select a/tx and b/rx
Set it back when you are done to resume "normal" APRS use.
From Bob Bruninga:
Side A TX on 145.945. RX on side B on 437.105 at the beginning of pass
and work down to 437.090 at end of pass... TNC baud rate remains at 1200
baud.

The cheap and quick antenna is to build a 1/4 wave, I have not tested this
with Sapphire, it's worked with PCsat.

I've been coping 1200 baud packet, not 9600
Antenna: 19" long whip

Should be a good Calif pass.
Send beacons, posits, messages to APRS via KE6QMD
on 145.945 Mhz.
Good luck!

That's easy. Mount a vertical 19.5" whip in the middle of a piece of
sheet metal, screen wire, or anythign that can be used as a ground plane
that is about 3' or so across. This makes an ideal antenna for SatGates
since it works as a 7dBi gain omni for UHF and a 5 dBi omni for VHF.
Gain is great above about 25 deg where the satellite is close enough to
hear it on an OMNI.

Set band A to 145.945 and Band B to 437.100
Set MENU-RADIO-TNC to txA and RXb. (for PACKET mode)
Then save in PM4 <== I use "4" so I can remeber it (437...)
Also MENU-MEMORY-AUTO-PM-STORE OFF
Turning off the autoPM store makes sure that you can change channels on A
or B for other satelites (AO27, SO-50, or future ECHO) but that the
default for PM4 will always start at the same place..
SIMILARLY:
For operating PCsat, and ISS, and Terrestrial APRS, while mobile in APRS
mode without an external PC, I use PM1. There I have the TNC set for APRS
and TX/TX on band A. Then all I have to do is change Channels to go to
the three different systems. This has been GREATLY simplified because now
PCsat, ISS and APRS on the ground will all relay packets VIA WIDE...
So all you have to do is QSY, no other changes needed.

AMSAT and Hams have been doing satellites for over 40 years, but most of
us have only had PC's for 10 years or less.
Point being, that you dont have to have a PC to know when a satellite will
be generally in view. ALl you need to know is the period of the satellite.
100 minutes: PCsat, Sapphire and AO-27
98 minutes: SO-50
92 minutes: ISS
If you hear a pass of any of them, unless its the last one, then you will
hear it again one period later. In addition, there are other patterns:
For PCsat, Sapphire and AO-27:
- Each pass is 30 minutes earlier each day.
- Then once a week, ADD 100 minutes for PCsat and Sapphire
- Once every 3 days add 100 minutes for AO-27
(At least this works at my latitude.)
For ISS:
- Each day, the best pass is either 32 minutes later or 62 minutes
earlier. Again, you may hear another one 92 minutes earlier or later
too..
I dont expect anyone to use this method much except in special cases.
Mine was on a 2 week family trip in remote areas of Utah. I just
monitored for half a day for MIR, and once I heard it, then, a pencil and
note pad let me estimate passes the rest of the trip.
I'd also like to see someone do a little PIC processor key chain with an 6
character LCD display. It wouldnt have to implement a full NASA 2 line
satellite predictor, but just keep three timers running for each
satellite. One divides by the period. The other divides by hours, the
third adds in a little longitude offset daily for precession.
Then, whenever a satellite is in view, it BEEPS and displays the Satellite
name and an estimate of the maximum elevation (low, medium or high)...
You'd update it once a month from your PC before travels...

In the last pass, I heard my own digipeated traffic with settings
mentioned below:
10:43:40R KG6JVE-1>APU25H,KE6QMD*,SGATE,WIDE <UI C Len=67>:
@151843z3411.58N/11855.22Wk/000Frank in Thousand Oaks, CA {UIV32N}
Looks like it was not heard by any Igates.

Hello campers! I wanted to give you an update on APRS operations for the
2004 Baker to Vegas relay race. It looks to be our largest race to date,
with about 220 teams competing. More and more interest is growing in APRS
tracking, and teams are finding the money to buy trackers for their follow
vehicles. The APRS channel will likely be very crowded again, but we are
going to implement some big changes to lessen the impact on the area.
The maximum path we plan to run this year is WIDE2-2, but that will depend
in part on one issue - IGates closer to the race course. The reason
WIDE4-4 was used in the past was to ensure that the data reached the IGates
in Vegas, So. Cal or Central Cal. This thinking is outdated, particularly
due to the fact that the digi network is in much better shape than it was 4
years ago. However, as we look at the prospect of adding more trackers to
the race and lengthening the beacon intervals, we would like to ensure a
better percentage of packets reach the IGates. The more IGates we have
near the race course, the smaller path we can run. Our goal IS to make it
to an IGate, as most of the tracking is done via javAPRS web sites.
Therefore, the question is, are you able to put up a temporary IGate in the
vicinity of the Baker to Vegas race on April 24 & 25? It needs to only be
an RF -> INet gate, and can even use a scanner and sound card modem with
AGWPE if necessary. The gate can connect to aprsca.net:10150 and not have
to worry about any data flowing back down the pipe - thus ensuring that
bandwidth is not an issue (thinking of cell phone internet connections
there). These areas would be ideal for temporary IGates:
In California:
Baker (very important - almost the entire front third of the race course
can be heard through the IBex Pass digi)
Shoshone
Tecopa
Anywhere along CA-127 from Baker to Shoshone
Anywhere along CA-178 from Shoshone to the Nevada State Line
In Nevada:
Pahrump
Anywhere along NV-372 from the California State Line to Pahrump
Mountain Springs
Blue Diamond
Spring Valley
Anywhere along NV-160 from Pahrump to I-15
As long as these are RF -> Inet only gates, there cannot be too many. If
we had these temporary gates all along the course, we would be able to run
the trackers direct! The problem is phone line access along the course, so
the next best thing would be to get gates in the cities that I listed. If
we had every one of those spots filled, we could run WIDE1-1 on the
trackers. If you are interested or able to setup an RF -> Inet gate for
the weekend of the race, please contact me! Thanks for your time.
