Mike and the Group,
If you look at www.mepin.com you will find a group in Michigan that is
using the 9612's and ham frequencies to send pages and alerts to
alphanumeric pagers. They are using it in various parts of Michigan locally
and wide area.

Subject: [aprssig] Paging...

I have a question about paging...

I want to get a line (or two) of text data to someone about a mile a
way, at the most.

I've looked into pagers, and ran into some brick walls.

BUT... I discovered that there are HAM setups out there that use
pagers. My understanding is that a lot of the standard pagers can
cover down to 2M, or the UHF HAM frequencies.

OK, so what do you use to transmit on HAM frequencies. A radio
with a 'flat' input. I know. But are the people who do this using
POCSAG or whatever it's called?

The reason I ask is I can get the pagers to receive the data cheap
enough. I can even get the transmitter (on business frequencies)
cheap enough as well. But I need to get the data onto the transmitter.

I can buy Kantronics KPC-9612+ units and they will work, but now
I'm pushing the limit of my budget (yes, I will be doing more than one
setup). From what I understand, that's what some HAM clubs are
doing, using a 9612+ to a standard HAM transmitter to transmit
packets to pagers tuned to the HAM bands for things like club
announcements or emergency callouts and such.

So... can someone enlighten me on this. Is there a simple POCSAG
or whatever 'interface/modulator' that can be tied into a radio to
transmit to a standard pager? Or are there other 'simpler' formats
that standard pagers can listen and accept as data.

The data does NOT have to be secure, but it has to get there.

Mike

Keith,
Before you get slaughtered up here let me point out some things that I
saw...

A beacon every 7 minutes is probably a bit much.

You shouldn't act as a RELAY digipeater if you can't hit the nearest WIDE
digipeater yourself. If you can hit the local WIDE digipeater then you
shouldn't use an UNPROTO path of relay, wide. It should be WIDE or WIDE2-2.

Congrats on getting everything wired and working. That is sometimes the
hardest part. I would recommend getting the new firmware for that TNC. It
includes lots of extras that you may find important now and later on down
the road.

If I can assist you in any way, please let me know.

73s,
Eric KF4OTN

A quick look at http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/near.cgi?call=AG4AC shows that
he is what I would consider a good distance from other activity. The
nearest digi is 40 miles away, the nearest "home station" is about 20 miles
form him.

Of course, the ideal is a modern TNC, but he is probably fine for learning
in a location such as Jacksonville, Alabama.

People

I have updated OziAPRS with some new features. There are two extremely
important new features being tested :-

	a) Interface to Microsoft MapPoint.
	b) Interface to Garmin RINO Units

MapPoint Interface
------------------

OziAPRS now will interface to Microsoft MapPoint for mapping. Stations are
added as PushPins, with callsigns and details attached to the pins. The
support is rudimentary at the moment. Upon starting OziAPRS, the MapPoint
integration can be started by selecting 'Connect to MapPoint' in the
'Interface' menu. This will start a new copy of MapPoint with the
integration built in.

Integration has only been tested with MapPoint 2001 - Microsoft Australia
will not sell a copy of MapPoint in Australia unless you have a 'select'
type agreement. I have ordered a copy of the software internationally, and
will work with a newer version as soon as it arrives.

Apparently there are some issues with the license in MapPoint 2004 against
fleet management systems. If you are wanting to use OziAPRS with MapPoint as
a Fleet Management System, carefully read the license. I will add the
capability to only update the data to MapPoint every 15 seconds soon.

Garmin RINO Interface
---------------------

The Garmin RINO interface is still being tested. I would encourage anyone
testing this part of the software to contact me.

OziWay Quick Waypoints
----------------------

We have written a small utility to create waypoints in OziExplorer at the
current position based on a keypress...

Download
--------

You can download the latest version of OziAPRS from

P.S. For those who are using CamTrak, integration will be added in the next
couple of days.

For what it is worth...
I live within direct range of the intersection of I-4 and I-75, East of
Tampa. This is a VERY busy intersection with much "non-local" traffic. I
keep a d700 on 24/7 with Voice Alert active. In the past few months I have
heard very few "pings". Mostly the same folks.

A few months ago I drove from Maine to Florida with Voice Alert active.
Only heard 3 pings.

Such a good idea, but it needs more publicity.

Hi folks,
If you check out the Alabama area, you'll find for my
county and general 20-30 mile area, I appear to be the only mobile.
That's one reason I'm putting this up right now. My base station CAN
hit the next digipeater for wide (WB4GNA). I'm on a fixed income and
spent my 40 bucks available for this month getting the older TNC. I'll
probably have to do with this for a while. The main reason I put this
up was to support me around my town, Jacksonville, because there are
areas that the other digipeater can't read my mobile readily. Based on
what you folks sent back to me, which by the way, is genuinely
appreciated by the neophyte to APRS, I'll set the following today:

Leave myalias as relay
Turn off the HID, every 9.5 is it's setting.
Set btext packet at 15 minutes or so.

I'm still abit confused about the UNPROTO setting.

I don't right now think I'll flood anything locally.

I appreciate all the help on this. Later, when I can afford it, I'll
get a better TNC up and running. But please help me get this one to an
acceptable configuration for now.

73 to all. Keith. AG4AC.
