Subject: APRSd raw data port?

For those still running APRSd as their IGATE software, is their a RAW
data port available? I thought it was 14580, but it appears on 14580
when weather data from WXSVR is sent out it does not get sent to clients
connected to port 14580.
For example:
Tonight several things went out on RF for GRR and DTX counties. My
Ui-View station of RF saw them fine from the APRSd igate. However, my
XASTIR box and my APRS+ box connected to 14580 of aprsd did not see the
WARNS and WATCHES.
I am trying to make sure I have a solution to this before we start
implementing some possible ideas here in Michigan.
Can someone try this for me? Connect to the raw data port of your IGATE
when there is weather and see if you get the weather from WXSRV via
TCP/IP.
Any help would be GREAT!

Standing on top of Stone Mountain GA with a D7 and being 1000' or more
above average terrain, I heard not a single Voice Alert Mobile. (except
mine in the parking lot 1000' below.
With a clear horizon out 50 miles, and being only 10 Miles from Atlanta
and Decatur GA and other metro areas, I was surprised. Further, of
the few APRS operators I talked to on various repeaters during my week in
Georgia, none had heard of it.
The only mitigating circumstance was that it was not commute time, being
middday on 24 Dec.
Just a data point...

It may also be that more aprs users are using just trackers, or dedicated
radios, and not the Kenwoods. For instance, I always have a tracker running
(Pic-E), and add a tnc / laptop when on longer trips.
The radio is mounted and inaccesible, has no mic, etc. The 2m radio in the
car doesn't decode PL, and I use it on the more conventional 146.52 and/ or
other voice repeaters. I guess I just more believe not mixing voice with data.

Does anyone know how to make the Kenwood TM-441A go below 438 Mhz?
I am trying to get in down to 437.1 Mhz.

Hi Jim,
The only model listed at http://www.mods.dk was the TM-441E .... I had
to Translate it from German to English....
Hello, here a small guidance, as one with the Kenwood Tm-441e a
frequency range of 340-512 MHz to reach can. Under the Prozssor plate
(front plate) directly under the "toning branch" is a diode D209. In
addition one must solve the Mic Buchsenmutter, as well as all adjusters.
Afterwards one can remove the Plastikgehaeue. The LCD unit is only put
and can be now taken off. Afterwards the metal frame (4 screws) remove
and the processor unit off take, however with 2 screws is still secured!
On the back simply the diode D209 or einzelnet pin high-bends and
already can one unsolders from approx. 340-512 MHz receive. To send goes
also, only is not well-known me, in which range. Cradle-said, the diode
is DETAILS under the toning branch! For enstandenen damage no adhesion
can be naturally taken over.vy 73 de Oliver, DG7XO, mail@dg7xo.de

My mobile, IC706 Mk2 is going to gain a UT-86 tone decoder at the next
opportunity. The $60 is a small price to pay for adding the enhanced
functionality of Voice Alert. Where I'm now living, folks are using Voice
Alert on a routine basis. Being next to I5 makes for even more potential
contacts.
The tone decoder will allow me to "scan" 144.39 along with the other
repeaters in Western Washington.

Strange as it may seem .. not all APRS operators subscribe to this list ;-)

And in my opinion, a terrible mistake in not joining at least one of the
aprs special interest groups, either tapr.org or ui-view on Yahoo.. It
should be a requirement, :-)
I have been fortunate to have several contacts on my travels that may not
have taken place without the Voice Alert...

I have a question about paging...
I want to get a line (or two) of text data to someone about a mile a way,
at the most.
I've looked into pagers, and ran into some brick walls.
BUT... I discovered that there are HAM setups out there that use pagers.
My understanding is that a lot of the standard pagers can cover down to 2M,
or the UHF HAM frequencies.
OK, so what do you use to transmit on HAM frequencies. A radio with a
'flat' input. I know. But are the people who do this using POCSAG or
whatever it's called?
The reason I ask is I can get the pagers to receive the data cheap enough.
I can even get the transmitter (on business frequencies) cheap enough as
well. But I need to get the data onto the transmitter.
I can buy Kantronics KPC-9612+ units and they will work, but now I'm
pushing the limit of my budget (yes, I will be doing more than one setup).
From what I understand, that's what some HAM clubs are doing, using a 9612+
to a standard HAM transmitter to transmit packets to pagers tuned to the
HAM bands for things like club announcements or emergency callouts and
such.
So... can someone enlighten me on this. Is there a simple POCSAG or
whatever 'interface/modulator' that can be tied into a radio to transmit to
a standard pager? Or are there other 'simpler' formats that standard
pagers can listen and accept as data.
The data does NOT have to be secure, but it has to get there.
Mike
