Hi James!
Thanks for this information! Although the 'A' model is a tad bit different,
I was able to determine that instead of the diode, there is a small green
jumper wire that I clipped. You do not need to do anything but remove the
top cover to get to the green wire...although I took mine all apart to look
for the diode. So if anyone wants to add this to the Mod list, that is the
trick!

Actually, if we could get APRS hams to adopt the 4FSK scheme, then paging
would be a pretty simple variation of the data format, and then we'd be
into the 80's technology with 4800 and 9600 baud with FEC.
I seem to recall the old 9612 having pocsag mode. These must be pretty
cheap by now. I looked on eBay, which is always overpriced, and that means
they are probably about $60 at swap meets.

There's a Clive Cooper DOS version of a modulator with a ZIP file that
includes a schematic. Click on the "local copy" link.

Bob,
You may not have heard any Voice Alerts while at Stone Mountain, however, I
did notice you got several APRS messages - in addition to mine -- while you
were at the rock.
I have looked several places for Voice Alert instructions using a TH-D7
without success. I'm looking for step by step equipment setup, operating
procedures, etc. Since the ARRL book on APRS is out of print, where can a
beginner get that kind of information?

Trying to install Prec Mapping on a V251 software installed on a new
computer with XP Home. the V251 works just fine but the MAO OCX will not
install. When I follow the procedure and activate the BAT file the
following error message appears < load library ("MAPOCX.OCX")failed - the
specified module could not be found. >
all of the files are installed in the windows folders as they should be and
I can find nothing work. I could find no info in the past messages about
this and wether it is an XP problem.
Any help or suggestions.

Has anyone tried or presently using any of the "Car PC" systems as seen on
the internet? They are based on a VIA system motherboard. Mainly advertised
as mobile DVD,MP3,GPS Navigational units but are basically a 1+Ghz Windows
or Linux based PC in a very small case 17cm X 17cm.

Well, this is a marginally APRS-related question... I'm re-doing my Geiger
counter design for use with the OpenTracker. The high voltage power supply
is based on AB7IF's design, tweaked a bit to run on a 3-volt input instead
of 9, and to use the MCU's PWM output to take the place of the oscillator.
The unit I've got now I put together with whatever parts I could get at the
local electronics store, along with a transformer Russell was kind enough to
provide me. Trouble is, now I'm trying to find equivalent parts that are
available through Digikey, and I have no idea what the specs on the
transformer are.
It's labeled 716 6YK. I'd have to tear apart my working unit and dig up my
high voltage probe to get exact numbers, but I think the output voltage was
around 120 volts with a 3 volt input. A voltage multiplier kicks it up to
the required 900 volts - the exact voltage is determined by a shunt
regulator.
Aside from the number of windings on the primary and secondary, I really
don't know what parameters are relevant or where to look for an equivalent.
Suggestions, anyone?

Hurdle 1 passed. Wired TNC. Hurdle 2 passed. Got it to work with
Dos APRS. Working on the digipeater deal. My firmware is update 3.
Does not have APRS specific firmware. No UIDIGI command. Set up
mycall and reset myalias to relay. Set up beacon every 7 minutes and ID
every 9.5 minutes. I need format to put my position and such in the
beacon text so I'll pop up as an APRS relay digipeater on the APRS
screens all around here. Oh yeah, I set my UNPROTO to APRS via
relay, wide. Okee dokee. That's all folks. 73 de Keith. AG4AC.

Look under CTCSS on pg 39 & 40 of your D7 Manual. Set it up to use a freq of
100.0 and turn on CTCSS. Then you will have voice alert. You won't find the
phrase "voice alert" in the manuals. When another APRS mobile has this
turned on transmits then your radio will break squelch and know someone's
nearby. Contact him by voice and move to another frequency or band.
Hopefully I explained it right.

Okay, actually read some of Bob's text files and put in a beacon text
message that has started showing up on the system. Now I have found
out by digipeating my mobile through my digipeater that it is putting
the word relay into the packet forwarded instead of my callsign.
Apparently my alias callsign goes in there. Should I put my regular
callsign back in or will it not digipeat to APRS then???

RELAY is perfectly acceptable in the world of APRS. If you put
your callsign in the MYALIAS, then it won't repeat anything that's
addresses via "RELAY", and the value of the digi is lessened. My
suggestion is that you are doing just fine, and you might want to work with
APRS for a while before you try anything else. At some point, you MAY want
to use the TNC in KISS-mode and use a computer-based digi program, but that
isn't necessary unless you decide you want to do it.
